Open the faction feedback subforum. Nearly every complaint is about ganking. This unwritten rule of "fair fights", numerically fair at least, has apparently produced enough tears to fuel a Zoner invasion armada.
I am interested to know what is your opinion: do you think that upholding this unwritten rule brings less grief than not abiding by it as strictly would?
I myself don't think that everyone should suddenly begin to pile missile gunboats on light fighters. But I neither think that we should force others to abide by these "guidelines" which we tend to follow. I think that fair fights would be more valuable if they were held with sincerity and friendship, rather than because some "guidelines" made by other people force them upon you. The way it is feels artificial. I don't think that you should expect a numerically fair fight from your enemy, nor that you should have any reason to demonize the enemy if they use a slight advantage against you, especially if you would do the same, but instead that you should be happy if the enemy confronts you with honour and gives you a fair fight.
I think that the so called "honour" should be a concept of the more skillful players, if they are kind enough, and it seems to me that this "culture" of allegedly "fair" fights, numerically at least, has been slowing us down. Some factions can win battles by being interesting to veterans and enforcing these "guidelines" on their members, and members of other factions, while some other can do it by being attractive to new players, a mass of them. I think that this skill should also be treated as one. I believe that the game would be more fun, especially to newer players, if these restrictions were looser, than it currently is.
This is just my opinion. But the most important part of this post is the underlined question above, because I would like to know yours.
The only thing that matters is considering, before an engagement, the enjoyment and fun of other players. And that's not just the other side, but yours too. How will they react if you pile their 4 fighters with caps? What will your teammates think if you force some people who wanted to play to step out, or log off ships they don't enjoy flying?
All in all, this is just the everyday life of a faction leader. Encounters can't always be perfect, but you can strive to make them as fun as possible for the most people possible. I like to apply utilitarian principles to PvP. Maximum pleasure, littlest pain. 4 positive kudos evenly spread across both sides in an engagement, with one negative complaint, is what I would consider a success at least.
Generally, though, both sides (complainer and person receiving complaints) should apply common sense in regards to ganking feedback. For example, say an engagement gets a bit out of hand or the leader makes a lapse of judgement and a fight ends up becoming a gank - or the other side feels like it's a gank - this is just a one off, mostly innocent mistake that can be rectified in future. But say a group of players consistently piles ships on an individual or individuals and ganks the living crap out of them, this is what I would call poor behaviour, and the people behind this should be held accountable.
tl;dr What are your actions saying? Are you trying to improve the gameplay environment and enjoyment of others, or destroy it in order to only satiate your own?
Addendum: Also people need to remember this is a game, not real life. People play it to have fun and enjoy themselves. Taking realism (i.e "it makes sense for me to pile 10 battleships on 1 snub!") and making it more important than fun is not constructive to the gameplay environment.
I have ben away from disco for long time i just return and i have 5 days that i start to play agein begin from scrach.
Disco has change a lot since my time. most of them for the better from what i can see so far, the only main problem that i see is very very low population and when ppl see some pvp they jump like crazy.
My first pvp since i start agein was a totali gang bang.
I was in a freelancer trader ship: Raba.
I was caring black market arm the ones you buy from detroit. A bh player cd me and called a cops wich a BH has no reason at all to act like a LPI or a LN but this is not the point.
I stop, hell i was tired of F3 and F2 all time, lets do some rp. Lets enjoy the old days making up some stories of what im doing or why im doing it, i even was near a base i coud make a run for it rely easy and dock.
In just 1 min LPI fighter and another LN fighter came. after 2 min a GB and a LABC came to
OK i start the RP:
Hello oficer how is your day
You drop you cargo and pay 3 mil fine.
But oficer im going for leeds resistance base. they need this weapons to fight the grn, they are fighting for their lives.
Drop cargo and pay me 3 mil fine.
Oficer im not going anywere, i shut down my engine. lisen to me, if we lose the foot hold on leeds we will lose the war.
LABC captain drop the cargo or i will shoot you.
(in that time i understood what i was talking to and i sad fuk it)
Hey you captain with your big ass battlecruiser go and fight some GRN instead of going after 1 trader you pussy.
(after that moment 1 of them told me for the last time im not sure who LABC, LPI or GB told me to drop the cargo 3 sec after i got ganged from all of them i a died).
1 LABC 1 GB and 2 fighters after one medium trade ship.
This was my first experience in returning to disco after some years.
You wan some quasi fair fights? avoid liberty and bretonia.
Go to omicrons and finde some TBH and hessians dam even outcasts. there you can have some fun with RB and PVP
As long as there are people, everything dirty will happen. That's just natural and not really worth discussing.
If you're not sure - don't go.
Also one hint: the smaller you are, the easier it is to go forth and backwards.

And yet people are discussing questions of morality, ethics and behaviour to each other since ancient times (or actually even longer) to the present. Why? Because if they won´t, many people will lose chance to realize they might be doing something wrong. Sure, there will always be people who act bad on purpose or because they don´t consider what they do as bad. But there are also people who do it because there was no one around them who would say "Have you ever thought that this is not right and you should not do it because it´s not right?"
So while it can be beating dead horse for vets which have seen threads like this one for way too many times, there are very likely also newer players which may read the OP and posts in thread and think about the matter from whole new perspective. And next time they will maybe try to act the way to have a fight more enjoyable for both sides.
I'm not against some balance efforts. If you can get the parties involved to consent to such a thing, then by all means. But some become reliant on it and then it does become some 'unwritten' thing that they believe everyone thinks like that all the time and are 'bad sports' if they won't go along with it.
Last week I was flying a FL fighter in Leeds, came across a BAF and MRG (I think), and I didn't intervene. When I came back, a BPA (ironic) was there watching them 1v1. I held off as well. After a few minutes, another Gallic fighter showed up and flew in guns blazing, a larger fight of 3v2 happened as I joined in for the Brets. What happened? The first BAF died, then the BPA, then me.
See how that can go? All because we sat there and waited. But you know what, I never once thought about complaining because it was our risk to take, and we all know it. What a first world problem! Once other players come in range, you hedge your bets on hesitating, so usually action breaks out. I guess I'm some kind of Discovery 'conservative' over here. When I launch, if I die, I knew what I was getting into when I fly into an engagement. If more enemies show up last minute and I get taken out despite all my efforts, I see it as fair.
To me, complaining about it just shows your anger at losing at the last minute. Accept how the live environment goes. In Connecticut, you can insist on balanced fights. During planned events, you can insist on balanced fights, at least starting out. But with impromptu engagements usually the point is to try to outnumber your enemy and still get them before they can withdraw or avoid the fight altogether.
And when it comes to ruining fun, remember that some people play here for the simulation. That means, taking it kinda seriously despite the fact its just a game, not treating it like a typical arcade style shooter. The same argument can be used that since its just a game, you can't always demand the maintenance of balance when it contradicts the open endedness of a role playing game.
And on the other side of things, I've seen a lot of people going "oh, there's a gank, I don't want to get involved in that encounter". If you can, please, get involved! Balance it out! You lose nothing other than a bit of time and effort, and you make everyone's experience there more interesting.
