Guys, what if you just restart as one of the forementioned IDs? Its notlike you forced into making character with elaborate backstory.
"I used to not care. I just went along with orders and hoped that everything would work out for me. But after all that's happened, you know what I've learned? It's not about hating the guy on the other side because someone told you to. I mean, you should hate someone because they're an asshole or a pervert or a snob, or they're lazy or arrogant or an idiot or a know-it-all. Those are reasons to dislike somebody. You don't hate a person because someone told you to; you have to despise people on a personal level." - Private Leonard L. Church
I specify my merc because this is a major story event and Freelancers have very little agency as it is. Just let me be part of a fleet battle, please. Durandal said it's okay at this point, and I really wasn't planning on just waltzing up and being like "time to be the hero of the day!" I just want to be able to help out without getting sanctioned.
This is literally what freelancers do. Why is this such a big deal?
There are few things I gotta mention about this "Event", which I believe others don't want. I don't want to be silent, I don't care what you will say and what you will do to ban me or whatever you are planning to do.
This event makes to sense. There are million things going thru my mind. I believe you've made this type of event because of a good reason, and I believe you want other not to know what you're planning to do. You've not taken into notice the numbers in this battle. Crayter Republic sometimes handled the gank that they've experienced, sometimes not. But the numbers really now to go crazy when it comes to Outcasts. They know to do up to 18 vs 1 In the end, bring large amounts of bombers and capital ships. VHFs that they bring when there are no caps left, they CD which is total trolling. Their Roleplay also makes no sense. There's no something like "We've brought this fleet to control this sector..", just an example. Literally Outcasts come into the combat saying 1 Line of RP then engage, sometimes none. I won't take that into the consideration when there's a specific thread in the forum for that.
The thing that I want to say that this event is not balanced at all. There's no fun in this. Right-clicking for hours, days, weeks. When it comes to actual combat, the numbers are abnormal. Crayter Forces don't bring that many snubs, not even that many caps, comparing it to the Outcast, who bring 30 people to fight like 5-8 =CR= players, which makes no sense. They're not even trying to make this balanced by saying "I believe you got this handled", example.

What about Bounty hunters?
If I recall correctly, Bunters can also be hired.
then why Not Bunters?
What heppens if all freelncers join Outcast?
See... it's things like this that makes me feel like it's a slippery slope.
can see the 'realism' (as it's argued) that Mercenaries would play a part in the conflict. But imagine if everyone flew Freelancers in this event. Ultimately, I just don't see what's so difficult about making a CR or OC as mentioned in the OP.

The two PoB battleships are balanced equally. The victory/defeat conditions of the two sides are identical. The PoB rebalance being tested aims to turn sieges more into PvP than PvB events, open to a wider range of people than before.
I do agree with Lyth about "inviting everybody and their mom because reasons" being a bad thing. Besides that though, the event is as fair as it can get.
I believe anything else, especially issues stemming from player conduct, is outside of the scope of this event, and should be dealt with accordingly. Optimally elsewhere.
When said mercenaries pass by and are impromptu hired. This debate is ending now. Freelancers are permissible because freelancer is an occupation, not a faction, and therefor are not affiliated with either side of the engagement beyond whoever is paying them.
