I'mma pitch in with some input as-well in the hopes to settle some of the arguments here:
1: Mentality of war
How come Gallia had a stalemate and all they accomplished in 5 years was pour into Magellan?
Because Gallic soldiers were an invading army, they simply followed the orders of a tyrannical outdated government system or suffer severe punishment, they had no intention to invade Sirius, kill so many people while throwing their own lives away for something that happened almost a millennium ago when none of these colonies even existed. They simply have no motivation for this war, while Bretonians are fighting for their very survival, hell Bretonians would make projectile cannons out of trash bins and tachyon weapons out of incandescent light bulbs if it offers them the slightest hope for survival while many Gallic soldiers may harbor secret thoughts of desertion or outright treachery.
2: Gallic war preparation
According to the old Gallic lore, they have spent hundreds of years frantically building up their military might so that they could pour into Sirius and "take revenge" on ALL of the Houses, with that amount of preparation they won't just back off, sign cease fires or settle with what they already conquered UNLESS the monarchy is overthrown by the Council.
I think it may be worth taking in consideration planning an event together with the community at large at a certain time when most involved players will be able and willing to attend where Council and allies will attempt this coup, maybe by having a huge fight in IDF against GRN/GRP and the winning side decides the outcome of the war. (eg. Council wins: Gallic war ends right then and there / GRN wins: Gallic advance continues)
3: An invasion of this scale won't just stop after a few years, it would easily take decades for that to happen, if people in the community are tired of this war and want it to end, perhaps we can inRP skip a few decades and simply write the story of the outcome in the lore without implementing everything into future mod updates, but if we go this route we need to write decades worth of lore for every single faction so it's up to the determination of the community as a whole I think.

Holy hell, there's a name I didn't expect to see. It's almost like we're getting the band back together. At this rate, I'll be tempted to try another Buccaneer revival.
As to the end of the war, I'm looking forward to it. I'm particularly interested in the RP of a post-war Bretonia. Even without a big enemy like Kusari or Gallia, there will be plenty of activity to be had. The movement against the Zoners in O49 has the potential for future conflict. Against the Zoners, if they choose to get militant and fight back. The Corsairs won't be happy about it, nor will the Coalition (unless the current attempt at diplomacy works out and they choose not to fight over GC). Conflicts against the Mollys and Gaians will likely flare up again, too, once the outside enemy is gone.
Even more interesting to me is what happens with post-war Gallia. Whether the Council wins and ends the war, or the Royalists end the war themselves to focus on keeping the Council at bay, their relationship with the houses of Sirius could be interesting. With EFL starting to export their gate/lane tech, Ageira's monopoly in that area is effectively over. Also, how much of their gains in the Taus will they be allowed to keep, and how will the factions in that area (CR, NO, IMG, Malta, etc) settle their own conflicts with Gallia?
I'd probably be down for a Buccaneer revival as it was super fun to do, and I reference our pirate RP almost all the time when discussing what I feel would be proper pirating in video games. Though mind you, I haven't played Freelancer in years, and the last time I appeared I did the little set up thing that they have for returning vets and... promptly dropped it.
I'm interested in a post-war Bretonia as well. The thought was always interesting on how my Bretonian characters would adjust to. I'm sure a couple of them would still hold a vendetta against the Gauls and try to continue the fighting. Especially if post-war Bretonia is occupied by the Gauls with a puppet leader in charge.
In regards to the Zoners in Omega-49. I hope no one forgot about the Bretonian Colony that exists on the planet. Port Jackson, I think it was called, and if I remember correct it was established there with the permission of Doc Holliday's group of Zoners. So Bretonia's renewed interested in O49 is probably to ensure that it's colony is properly secured from further threats that reside in that particular space. Of course... it would be a waste of resources to send BAF patrols to the system with the Gauls sitting smack dab in New London. I'm just theory crafting in regards to all of this because I'm very much out of touch with in-game events at the moment. I just found out that Southampton (may she rest in peace) was destroyed, by reading this thread.

Long story short, I couldn't use the search function to see if I had ever created a cannibal character to play... and then I saw this thread and read through it.
BRING BACK JOSEPH DE FRANCE! (please?)
I had a crush in high school on Austin.
I'd like to bring back Joseph DeFrance, he's a fun character and the dynamic I was going for with his rival (because I'm a lonely person who roleplays by himself) is something I'd like to see through to the end. Alas, I don't want to step on the toes of any official Gallic factions by bringing the Prince back. The only way I'd bring him back is with their permissions, and I remember how finicky people are with non-faction players trying to RP call the shots. Plus... I'm 95% sure that DeFrance is locked away in a Bretonian prison cell somewhere. Because... reasons.
It still surprises me that people love Austin as a character.
Believe me, if Joseph was in a Bret jail cell, his spine would have been tasting cold air and cold metal fingers yanking it from its place.. a long time ago.

He was a convincing Coriolanus, and a justifiably lawful good character who rationalised his principles. Most don't. It's exceptionally hard to justify "the right thing to do" within a character without being schlocky. He did.

The path from here, to Part II, to the next mod version, will be very dynamic in allowing players to participate and shape the face of the final battles of the war, even if not the outcome.
Some details, such as which of the 12 battleships currently parked in New London survive the final battle, may be left in the hands of the community.

Can indies and affiliated 3rd party characters participate meaningfully?
