they were strong before your time and it was one of the most awful things in Disco. You couldn't rp properly because a group of npc fighters would damage you if you didnt move, it was lame.
Not necessary to buff all NPCs, just ones within zones which supposed to be dangerous in RP, such as: contested territories, zones around nomad or wild bases, house capital planets.
We've had all this stuff in the past and it's horrible. It always sounds good in theory, but in practise, it just hurts interactions (and encourages hugging).

My fix on NPCs would to actually make them more deadly in the edge worlds, and even rare scary encounters in house space beyond the main bases/planets.
+1 sounds good I already suggested this with a couple fellahs in the Discord chat, we realy should go for it. A lil PvE content here and there wouldn't hurt at all.

So you complain about NPCs spoiling your trading, PVP activities and so on, but at the same time you want to buff them, so they will do it even better.

PvE content should be optional. Every single time someone has suggested such things, and the Devs are gullible to implement them, it ends up being terrible. I can cite high level Nomad NPCs in Delta post Omicron update irritating the crap out of people who didn't have a Nomad/Wild ID, or in .87 when all NPCs were made guard level and made piracy was impossible - I'm also sure veteran players can speak of the problems with Gallia's original NPCs as well.
Truth is, Discovery as a Mod is not made for PvE content outside of missions (and even that is questionable); which is where such features should be restricted imo, and available to players only if they choose.

Buff NPCs across the board. We aren't invulnerable superheroes, alone in space; we are a handful of characters each playing our part in a sector of billions. It shouldn't inhibit RP to have to deal with them, and I think it hurts immersion when they're taken out. (Especially when there aren't 200+ people on the server these days.)
I do agree cap-ship bumping and trade lane disruptions are very annoying, but the life they add to systems outweighs it to me personally.
If you come across the stuck jump gate/hole bug, can you not use the ole cruise dock exploit to get around them? (Go into the aperture of the gate or hole (like fast-docking) at cruise speed and hit "formation" on one of their ships simultaneously.)
In terms of the mining argument, I go back to the point about immersion. Your juicy ore ship and freighter are sitting on one of the most valuable and lucrative spots in all of Sirius, and you expect to be alone? There should be a broad ecosystem of miners, pirates and bounty hunters in areas like that, and there aren't enough of us to keep them equivalently covered.
As far as reputation goes, I intend no disrespect but I don't know a better way to say it: Just manage your reputation better? If your intention is to be neutral with many neutrals, can you not balance out your killing and use minimal depots and bribes to smooth out the rest? If your intention is to have a character that deeply and richly represents an RP faction member with many intense friendships and rivals, can you not blast depots, take bribes, and do missions to properly establish your rep? Of course, there is some (imho) buggy reputation behavior where certain factions are JUST friendly enough to the ones you're killing that it'll tank your rep even if your respective factions are neutral (or even friends) [I remember killing enough traffic in vanilla Kusari as a Blood Dragon eventually got you to full-green with Synth Foods...], but that can easily be solved with bribes which, compared to how much we are making through trading, is a pittance unless you're doing something extreme.
My verdict: keep them the same (barring bug fixes) or buff them (I'll take strength over quantity, if it comes down to it)
