Hiya @Loki1982, allow me to share my thoughts and views.
RP is what YOU make of it. Understanding the (essential in-game) things like the ID and your reputation which you have accordingly AND create for yourself while flying and acting, you are pretty much free to go about.
Yet, apart from real life, you are not always free to speak your mind (in-game and on forums) when it comes down to things which may be real-life yet are downright bad or frowned upon (racism, porn, extreme violence or anything with minors to name a few) . While it's a game, a ship can be restored, yet words, once said, cannot. Both in-game and on forum.
So your question about RP can only be answered by you yourself. Ask yourself the question: What does my character want? Am I in the right part of space to begin with? (I mean, playing a Nomad in Liberty space attracts certain attention, you better be ready for that.) And yes, there are players who prefer to pew than to talk but then again, it's a game. And like real life, things do not always happen the way we want them to. Fortunately, in this game you have moderators and admins who can help you out when great injustice is done.
Apart from that: Do your thing, get out there, play your role (character) and do so with pride and joy. Enjoy the good things and accept the lesser goods, after all... It's a game.

If your using something that is illegal in house space and you refuse to cooperate with the police/navy you will come under fire.

What about a Zoner and a corsair? thats true neutral....
Many Freeports are frequently used by Corsair to trade goods...
Thats why my character since childhood got interested in corsairs in the first place.
Its a realistic background for my role and the people I RPéd with usally gave a FXXX about my origin.

As I told you in a PM I was flying under a Zoner ID until a Liberty RP faction told me to change it to freelancer...
Do this...do that..... I try to fit in with my role.... I take advice from other players to improve....
But I can not do one thing without offending some others.....thats the result.
I will gain a Zoner ID again soon... Also Im working out a vessel license for at least liberty sector...
Im willing to change my backstory from gambled the ship to buying the ship on Crete...
There is a reason why I use Zoner weapons and a civil engine.....as proof of my alliance...
I accept even the reduced power output for the sake of the character!
There were obviously much more intelligent solutions to this dilemma then stupid PvP....
also.... 3 on 1 PvP takes much balls.... its just so heroic^^
I fled from certain death...not to evade further talk!
Furthermore...if your char is evil for the sake of being evil than that is just shallow and quite boring...tell a story!
I put thought into it!
Some others take a dump on believable RP and misuse it to engage battle with lazy Dialogue.
Being an ashole and speak a little spanish isnt enough to be a authentic pirate...
If you also like the corsairs you should know that they are a very brutal people due to there early years in sirius. They are raiders, even their allies/friends are very careful around them, piss one off and you will have guns taking aim and firing upon you. Also Corsairs don't normally sell their ships to just anyone, if you want to use a sair ship as a zoner send one of the corsair factions, DTR or TBH and see if they will allow you too, you'll either get a yes or a no.

Saw Liberty gave allowance to several Rogue ship classes...

Either way, the "YOU CANT HAVE THAT GEAR ONLY I CAN HAVE IT SO NOW I KILL YOU PEW PEW PEW" issue has been a re-occurring theme in disco, and one person posting a thread about it here is really just the tip of the iceberg of something that goes on with many if not most noobs, and has without a doubt caused many a player to turn away from disco before even hitting the forums.
I remember having the same problem around 2007-2008 when my nomad-gunned Freelance Raven's Claw got shot by nomad-gunned LSF Raven's Claws in New York, because its legal for them but not for me, and me getting very mad about it.
Thing is the Freelancer SP campaign teaches you the aim of the game is to get the coolest stuff that your ship can carry, and all you need to do is get the right rep to land on the base that sells it, or scoop it up in space.
Disco could be doing a much better job at teaching noobs what to expect if they play like that, before they meet LSF or Corsair "law enforcement".
It could do a better job at keeping "irp laws" more liberal so this stuff happens less, so the game becomes more intuitive for "SP campaing veterans".
It could do a better job at telling people to be more tolerant of each other (in this case both the TBH guys and Loki could have been) instead of saying "everybody must be excellent", which kind of has the opposite effect.
And it could do a better job at actually working on all these issues instead of just saying "oh well the problem is people just arent excellent enough, so its on them".

Yellowfin has RPed for that ship with the Official faction and has been approved by us.
I have personally put in the player request to give that Freelancer access to the GC tech.

RP is the ability to force your own imagination to work for you.
To, by choice, ignore the very concept that there is another player behind the character you encounter. That a ''bad'' encounter is not the result of another player's actions against you, but rather the ability to force yourself to imagine that the result is because of an unreasonable, unpredictable choice on the behalf of the character yours encountered.
RP in a nutshell is the ability to remove the feeling of RL from the equation. Ignore the forums, ignore any drop of anything OOC when you are in the game. The moment you stop overthinking it all and why did X character or Y group do Z and how did the player behind them benefit from doing so, you will find your overall enjoyment of the RP environment increase. Other people will weaponize RP. They will RP for the sake of a goal, be it another line for their ID or something equally as ''tangible'' as they need to feel that their time spent ingame is not ''pissing in the rain'', given that most of them have jobs and a family now. They cannot afford to ''waste time''. They cannot afford to ''rp for the sake of rp'' or to ''lose'' at RP.
The most important part is to selectively ignore those things about the roleplay method. To find what aspects of RP or the people you RP with annoy you the most and ignore them. Do not expect anyone else to change their ways, that is not how a normal human being works, but rather do enough mental gymnastics until you feel comfortable enough to play the game in a way that you enjoy.
