In light of the most recent banning of someone for swearing and the comment thereon...
I guess I'd like to check to see just exactly (without actually getting too much into those words here), just exactly what the Admins consider actually to BE swearing or coarse language.
I'm not trying to be difficult - it's just that I'm 47 years old, married, a military veteran, a 25 year cancer survivor (testicle cancer that metastized into my stomach and lungs) and certain words that I use are NOT the same ones that my 21 year old son uses.
Basically, due to the usage, I don't consider (whether in role play usage, or in private / group chat) using the words that Charlton Heston used in Planet of the Apes (damn and hell) to be cursing, especially in appropriate context. (Xeno, you'll fry in hell for that; Dammit, Devil, what were you thinking?)
I DO consider using the '7 words you can't say on TV' from the old George Carlin skit as to be inappropriate, and I consider bad / no RP and venting to definitely be punishable. Obviously directly calling someone in a venting and/or angry manner a dumba.. is different from watching someone you're fighting with accidently fly into a planet and calling them a dumba.. - but it's also about context. Even Captain Kirk used that description in a Star Trek movie (The Voyage Home) on the taxi driver. (What's even sadder is that I know this WITHOUT an IMDB reference.)
And with, of course, rule 3.2 that says RP threats ARE allowed - well, I hope you see where I'm coming from.
As I said, I'm NOT asking this to be difficult - I just want to make sure that we're all on the same page, and that we all respect other in fair game play. (As opposed to playing Halo 3 on Xbox Live, where everyone and their brother uses ALL the words, all the time...)
Carl Abrams (yes, that's my real name - this is too important a topic to hide behind a game name)

I think all the words that are allowed on TV should be allowed on the server. ONLY if in RP tho. I think that if someone gets a sanction report from another that is offended by this, they shouldn't be banned if in RP
Remember tho, there are ALOT of kids that play on this server. Thus using profanity really isn't too much appealing to the younger ones. I highly believe that this specific rule was made because of that. Players shouldn't be lost because someone else is providing a bad example by going around and cursing everyone

I'm with Agmen. A little clarification would be nice. Like Agmen, I too am a married man, 40 and an Army and Desert Storm veteran and while there are some obvious words I wouldn't use in server or forum, some are in that gray area of acceptability.
I also think that we have entirely too many trigger happy, camping players in server. You know, the one who will blast you for your cargo or the pirate who thinks that carefully blasting your shield away and armor to one block "to get your attention" before tolling but misjudges and kills you are out of control. If an admin thinks I'm going to say nothing, they're nuts. If they think I'm going to be nice, they're still nuts. In such cases, what is said is more reaction than anything.
So, clarification would be appreciated and maybe some understanding as well for such occasions as mentioned above.
I'm all for just about any obscenity, as long as it's in RP. Save the f-bomb, and few other choice specimens.
But there's a line between cursing someone in RP, and simply whining at them after you did something they didn't like. For example, I tricked a trader into a lone situation to claim a bounty on him. Afterwards, his trading buddy simply screamed at me in system chat: "****ING BS".
Not cool. Now if he had in RP said something along the lines of: "You bastard! How dare you?" that would have not only been RP, but completely acceptable in my eyes.
I agree with all that has been said, in rp context damn, bastard, hell, dumbass, and even stronger words should be allowed. look while there may be young kids, there are a fair amount of adults and i dont want to be sanctioned because ingame im getting shot down and i go "MAYDAY MAYDAY, **** IM GOING DOWN!"
now, while i agree with clarification and amendment, perhaps in the interests of free speech and such, to get rid of the foul language clause, as there is a variety of nationalities and cultures on this server and different things are vulgar to different people, and unless the words are used in a hurtful and immature context, there should be no ban.
perhaps what is needed is a clause instead of restricting speech, restricting only language deemed hateful by a consensus of admins.

It sounds much better like this. But the thing is that there is kid indeed in game. Also many people doesn't accept cursing in any form.
I have an idea. Why don't we do a dictionary of cursing. Using a new language of cursing.
Like to say "you bastard! How dare you" We could say "You dratsab! How dare you.
Who is up to create a dictionary of curse for disco Sever ?
Maybe it could stop the people to curse with the real word at other by using those fake words.
