...actually, piracy in freelancer is pretty much like real-world-piracy.
in the real world there are countless merchant ships, some very few pirates, who pick up one of them, and hold them hostage until their company pays their ransom, or a military ships come by and either scares them off, or sends boarding teams and kills the pirates (and half the hostages:().
In most cases the ship owning company pays the demand, and the pirates leave with their cash.
Pirates do not have the ability to sell what ever there is on the ship, we are speaking of thousands of tons here, they just settle for some cash, even if its not even 1% of the cargo's worth.
No in freelancer, the trader pays directly, but you can assume his company payed for it, since the pilot will have only a small wage for himself. And the pilot has no choice in the matter, what gives him a perfect roleplay excuse for "No blow me up, its cheaper", he can beg for his life, and tell the pirate, that his company does not pay up, offer some of his cargo, or whatever.
Pirates who are out there for the roleplay, usually play along, but most only want the cash or the blue line, aka feeling king.
The only thing that's not cool, is that police or military ships have no chance of intervention, piracy is to fast, trade ships just blow up, and that LN-Cruiser can look after the debris later, traders go down to fast for some good roleplay.
Or we can make their money disappear from char when they die, but it will abuse /givecash and if you encounter a lolwut pirate who is like "mooooney, I R pirate" Pew Pew, I think you will go crazy even if you sanction him .
On my trader I usually die from lolwut pirates. Every time I was RP pirated i didn`t mind it at all. It was fun playing as scared trader.
I always found it dehonesting when someone refers me as 'pirate'. It always reminds me of Cap'n Yarrrgh from the 'Scourge of Seven Space' holo-series. I wish I'd be that good. Protection racket? Extortion maybe? Cargo insurance, that's my favorite. Sounds a lot better.
But hell, the common people will always call pirates those who go after their hard earned money. That can't be helped. So what?
What I find entirely funny, hilarious in fact, is that everyone thinks GLOBAL whereas we should be thing inter-dimensional / inter-spacial.
Ask yourself this question, how big is Sirius?
is it:
A couple of miles / kilometres?
A few thousand miles / kilometres?
Or several light years?
Bear in mind that Sirius is 8.5 light years from Earth.
A rumour at Freeport 2 in Bering reports that the Jump lanes were set at an angle to fit into the 1.8 light year frame.
Then there's the jump holes and jump gates, how far do they extend?
As for traders dying, the same applies to everyone who dies, how can you justify RP'ing a dead person, however, trader ships are not players names, Pirates always use a name.
You can kill a ship and the character can be re-spawned as he wasn't killed, so it easy for a trader to come back, whereas anyone using a name, [LR].Fred.Bloggs as an example, is a pilot, if he dies, he can't come back.
The game will re-spawn you no matter what if it didn't, it would certainly stop anyone from re-entering a fight and even pirates would need to start from the beginning.

Who said that we should actually kill the character?:)We have escape pods, right? And about pirates, yes, they can pirate in a starflea. IF they are in a group of fellow pirates with something ... less ineffective.
Alright, as someone said, you described piracy in 18th century. Freelancer has modern day piracy.
Pirates intercept the ship, lock up the crew and takes the cargo hostage. Yes, you heard me, the cargo. Companies pay to have the cargo released. Pirates cannot take back such huge amount of heavy containers back home on their little motor boat.
PIrates are just loling more and more nowadays. Especially when I am flying on my CR trader, everybody wants not cash, but to blow up my ship or all cargo, even bombers say drop or all dai.
