Well it's a nice idea but I guess 'cause of the "flying through buildings" nobody with a cap or transport doesn't even look at the cutscenes.
I won't say no on the idea but as already said I won't guess it's a priority to change those city scapes.
' Wrote:So? Is it possible to make new city scapes and is it a "Good" idea?
Yes, very! You can do it, too. Anyone can, if they commit themselves to achieving a goal they have set for themselves and making their dreams come true.
Once you learn how to do it, check if the tutorial is on Starport wiki. If there isn't, put it there for others to use.
You can also make bars, docking bay interior and so on.
Some new interiors will go nice. Will be really enjoyable when just sitting on a planet and reading the news. (Like I usualy do when I have nothing better to do)
Interiors would be much easier to add than cityscapes, and nicer too. The bar/equipment dealers are .CMP files I think so take a look at them in milkshape or CMP hardpoint editor thing.
' Wrote:Question is, do we really need it at all? I'd much prefer if we can make a planetary system where we can fly rather than just change decoration that only the player sees for barely a few seconds before launching again.
Cool? Yes. Practicle? No. Freelancer's engine wasn't designed for it. It could be possible with a lot of work, but it's not really worth it. You'd have to create a new system for each planet and so on. Plus there's the whole gravity thing, or more specifically, a lack of it in Freelancer's physics.
About those big space ports on a planet. Would be real. Transports and other big ships stay in orbit and moor to the mooring ports. And unload their cargo. Small cargo vessels can take it from their to the planet.
Only ships who fit into the do docking ring are able to land on the planet itself.
About the landscapes. Would be nice but it will be a lot of work since every building needs a 3d model. I think leaving at it is would safe a lot of work. And they don't look to bad just shame some look the same ^^

Would be quite simple to do, although it might not be applicable. In order to have a different docking sequence for cap ships, we'd have to make the mooring ring lead to a seperate base with a different 'mooring' cut-scene rather than the planetary landing.
That means each base would need to be duplicated. That's quite a lot of effort for one small change.
As I recall Treewyrm was working on a couple of custom cityscapes for the Nomad planet(s), wasn't he? I remember being sent a couple of screenies sometime last year, but I'm not sure if they were just photoshopped or actual cityscapes.

Adam was working on some city scapes for Gallia as well. Remember he posted his funny texture bugs, can't remember if it was on the forums or in the LR chat.

Plus the mod's file size would increase drastically.
It's a great idea and that it is not in the priority list doesn't mean a submission will be rejected if someone makes one; I would do it myself but I don't have the patience or commitment to learn modelling on my own
