Two years ago I found a nice site how to set up your own server. A short time ago I found out this site has gone :( I did another search and found on YouTube an entry from Spazzy how to do it. Unfortunately it is outdated.
The weird thing: Spazzy says you have to add FLhook and that's what I did two years ago (IIRC). But it seems it already present.
You also have to add DSAccountMNG and to edit an INI file. I did, but to no result: I don't see any FLhook console pop up.
What did I do wrong or what did I miss? Any info or help is welcome!
Hello.
I am the person who created that video and thank you for pointing it out. It was outdated anyway, so due to what I am about to say - I have chosen to take the video down entirely.
It is now my choice that I will not be making a tutorial on how to host a private server due to the complications it causes to the main server. Today in 2016 new players are used to things such as "Regional Servers" and it has lead many new people trying our mod to end up picking US or AUS based private servers and never looking at the main Discovery Freelancer server due to this understanding. Due to the low or non-existant population of these servers, their impressions on the mod and their potential membership to Disco has been lost.
You can find more information about my thoughts on this in THIS video.
There are way too many private servers, hosted by individuals who think that it might be ''cool'' to have a listed server of their own and is, indirectly, damaging Discovery Freelancer as a mod. I am sorry, but while I would like to help you and, truthfully, the server setup is as simple as ever - it is my choice not to.
I hope you understand.

I understand and respect your opinion. This particular server was meant to stay "inside our house" only anyway, it was just meant for me and my son. The only thing what we wanted to use this server for is to have an easy mean to try out unknown ships and factions and to find out what it is to have, to maintain and experiment with a base W/O the burden of flying hours for gathering all the needed stuff.
I realise very well that if I would make it public, it always would lack the one thing that makes Discovery fun to play on: a big live population!
I see.
In that case I will PM you a step by step guide once I get the chance.
EDIT: Also, you can use the singleplayer mode for Discovery to test ships. Type "Help" in the chatbox and you will b given commands to beam your ship to bases, give yourself money and reputation and so on.

Why haven't I been told this before? Probably someone will shout "RTFM" but one cannot know anything.
Anyway I have been tinkering for just 15 minutes and I was able to give me a lot of money, to give me some good reputations, jump from one system to the other and to buy some fancy ships. This most probably will mean I can buy a Base Builder and build a base somewhere as well.

Only do so if you want to. I would be great if I could do these things together with my son but I'm already very very happy that I can do the things I wrote above. So a big THANK YOU!

You will not be able to build a base in the singleplayer.

I just found out my self :(
I also ran into another bummer: after the (re-)start of the game all save files are wiped. I found out after a crash in the first place. Then I found out it happens at every start. My solution: make a copy at the end of the game and copy it back AFTER the restart.
If this is just for you and your son, then run flserver in the discovery exe folder. Anyone on your home network can then join, but no one outside of the house. Saves you from all of the port forewarding and router setup. and ou can try out the game and the POB's. Kind of lonely with just 2 players but you get a feel for the game.
1.the dslauncher clears the save files because it causes some problems...
2.you can set a server for you and your son quite easy...just run flserver from game folder/exe/ and make use of the flhook (also always shutdown the server and not close the flhook window since won't save the changes)
3.however if you plan on making an internet server(not just for family ) you will have to know that are missing some files which are not released for public use, anticheat and some others..
People want to believe that God has a plan for them.
They don't wanna believe that anyone else does..
