I imagine in whatever passes for the final product there will be an option to hire NPC crew, making for a much more involved game than Discovery.
SC is almost my ideal game, but I wish there wasn't so much feature bloat. At least Elite: Dangerous had the good sense to get their intial design out the door before adding all the stuff they promised.

You will be able to hire NPC crew for any ship or to even fly your additional ships as escorts.

You do know that Chris Roberts was initially in the dev team for Freelancer? He sold it to Microsoft to help developping eveything he had in mind until MS decided that it's time to release it altho it hasn't even reached half of what it was supposed to be.
At least that's what I last saw on how vanilla FL was developped and why It sold under Microsoft.
Looking forward to it, have been a backer for a long time now. I'm not a big fan of the fact that they shut down their forums in favor of the IRC spectrum style thing, it's much more difficult to use to keep up to date on information about the game (and it's crap on mobile).
I've put over 300$ into the game so far, but I'm calling that my limit. Currently I have a cutlass black (gunship/multirole), dragonfly (space bike), and prospector (mining ship). The prospector becomes flyable with the 3.0 update so I'll see how I like it, mining is coming in 3.1 so I'll keep it at least until then. I really want to like mining in this game, but every other game that's tried has failed horribly at making mining interesting and fun. If the prospector is a bust, I'll probably swap it back to a freelancer MAX cargo ship and just do the cargo trade thing again, or possibly swap the prospector and cutlass both for a larger 250-350$ ship. I really liked the look of the origin 600 but it's way out of that price range.
