The potential of instakilling snubs is too high, especially in a fleet fight. This'd result in trapping newbies more than anyone else who don't know any better than to run from an exploding cap. Even if we make the range low (say 500m), do you really want to shiver every time you hear a cap exploding somewhere in the fight? It's realistic no doubt but it'd impact balance too much. Gameplay > roleplay reasons or realism.

I personally wouldn't mind. It would not hurt my gameplay experience (if at all) as much as it would add to the immersion by providing some additional realism.

Instakills are bad and there's no reason to encourage them further, especially by something you have no impact on and what can simply be random. If you want realism you came to the wrong game. The main issue is while it'd be a nuisance for you and me, it'd end up hurting new players the most.
I'd hardly call capital ship explosions in a fleet battle random or something nobody has impact upon. It's kind of expected, and in one way or an other, everybody does have their own impact on where and when it happens, if it happens.
I would not mind if there was a concrete way to hear the danger and then a longer fuse.

Think about why would a ship explode in space? If a ship was depressurised, the air would escape in space without which explosions are basicall not possible. And after a significant barrage bringing a ship down, it most probably is depressurised. One can theorise that the core exploded or some other stuff, but that does not happen with 100% probability and is rather a peculiar case. This movie-like explosions are unnecessary at all and to make them even more impactful in game is neither productive in terms of balance, nor in terms of immersion.

Like I said previously about the conversation around explosions and fires in space, but the animation happens, it'd be nice if it did more than look pretty
I would also like to see this re-implemented ( unless if NPCs killed their own loot problem cant be solved that is ) .
As for instakilling of snubs ( especially newbies snubs ) , when you are in snub , and in fleet battle when you move constantly , and if you are in explosion range , how hard is to see that ENORMOUS Liberty Carrier who take up half a screen is going to explode in that 10-15 seconds exploding animation ? Even most noob newbie of all , will only need to be cought in explosion once before he learns to stay away from exploding Capital ships . Thats called battle awareness , pay attention to your surrounding , and anything that can make you harm . When you are in fleet battle , you naturaly pay attention to current HP of some enemies anyway , and you will know how close some cap is to die and you will stay away from him if this gets re-implemented .
