I was killed by a pirate-- a player, not an NPC.
What annoyed me is that when I tried to escape into a trade lane, he was capable of hacking it, like an NPC lane hacker. I would have escaped using my afterburners had he not repeatedly blocked my ability to get into the lane. Each time I got to the next section of the lane, it stopped working and I could not dock.
I can not find a weapon or device for sale to the general "discovery freelancer public" that hacks a lane, or acts as a countermeasure to a lane hack. Are there commands for this?
If you shoot a lane, it gets disabled. I assume that is what happened. No way to prevent someone from doing it. You have to try to escape with a thruster/cruise.
You can always try to interact with the pirate and give him what he asks. It'll save you from dying most times and you might get a fun encounter.

You mean to tell me that the player shot the lanes preventing you from escaping? I've pirated people before and the silent cruisers to the Lane pretty much end up either paying or dying. Did you try to RP with the pirate at all, or just gun it?

The price was too high, and in my Serenity I get away when the countermeasures work. Alas, I was flying my large train, a ship I never would have purchased had I known it was a magnet for pirates and bored policemen. It's a pig with no defensive capability. It's good for short trips in friendly territory only.
I have to say, in my years of playing Freelancer this was a first for me. I will have to get one of those big $7M guns and try disabling a gate.
You can disable trade lanes with nearly any gun on any ship (cruise disruptors and mining lasers won't deal enough damage to the lane segment). Simply shoot at one of the little floating ringlets of the trade lane and it'll show the disruption animation, then stay down for a certain period of time.
Bonus tip: When pirating at a gate, don't disrupt the lane unless you have to. There is a bug in Freelancer where, if you disrupt the lane, then someone jumps into the system, the lane will appear as undisrupted to them, but disrupted to you. This will allow them to dock with the trade lane, even though it is technically disrupted.
When that happens, put a Bounty on that Pirate and provide as much information as possible as to where and when the attack occured, what ship he had etc. The Bounty Hunters Guild may be a bit dry at the moment but I am always looking for new bounties to undertake. That is one way to get back at him.
Jumpgates cannot be disabled unless through a special event. What happened was the trade lane was shot (disrupted) by the pirate to prevent you from making an escape. Anyone can shoot trade lanes as long as you have a gun or turret. Transports are, generally, not suited to protect themselves from pirate ships and typically need escorts if you're going to brute force your war past a pirate, especially a pirate bomber. The demand may sound high to you but keep in mind that the more value your cargo has, the more you can be pirated. It's not uncommon to have a full load of ores and a pirate demand 10 million from you, so long as the demand does not exceed maximum potential profit.

If traders always gave in, what fun would pirating be? Now if respawning were handled differently, traders might be more pliable. Is it possible to lose your ship after multiple respawns and find yourself in a cheaper ship? Does your bankroll start taking a hit? If not, the worst thing that can happen in a ship like a large train is to lose your cargo, shield batteries and nanobots. There isn't much equipment to lose, since most of the value is tied up in the ship and in the character's bankroll.
Of course the way to get around bankroll reduction would be to create a character named "BigBank" or something similar that never leaves home, and just transfer cash periodically to that character, who can then redistribute it as needed.
