History
The House of Rheinland maintains a proud military tradition dating back many centuries. After the "Von Rohe's Day", the former imperial navy was transformed into the Rheinland Military, also known as the Rheinwehr. The main focus of the Rheinland Military was on dangers that went beyond the level of activity of the police. The main opponents of the Rheinland Military have always been the Red Hessians and the Corsairs.
After the end of the 9th century, a group of Rheinland researchers encountered a previously unknown planet in the Omicron systems. Their discovery awakened the previously sleeping nomads, a dangerous alien race that once served as guardians for a higher civilization known as the Daam K'Vosh. The research team returned to Rheinland with a Nomad incubus that was able to infect human organisms and turn them into vassals of the Nomads. Unconscious of the dangers posed by this organism, the Nomads slowly infected numerous influential people throughout Rheinland, including members of the government and military, including Chancellor Niemann and Rheinwehr Admiral Schultzky.
The Nomads, whose goal was and still is to wipe people from Sirius, now held large parts of an entire nation in their hands and used this power to start wars through which people would weaken each other until they could not finally fight the Nomads themselves.
Schultzky, under the control of the Nomads, went to Liberty to see President Jacoby in the course of a summit meeting, with the plan to infect her, thus making Liberty a vassal of the Nomads as well. However, the organization "The Order", which had previously operated in the shadows, managed to destroy Admiral Schultzky's flagship, the "Donau". Since the public of the nations had not known about the Nomads until then, this attack was seen as a terrorist act against Rheinland. The Order was now declared an enemy.
The infected shipbuilders and mechanics in Rheinland equipped ships with new technology, the so-called cloaking devices. These have the ability to make a ship invisible. With the Nomads now pulling the strings, the Republic of Rheinland used all its resources to build warships and war machines. It now had the strongest military and fleet in all of Sirius.
The infected Rheinland Military thus began operations outside of Rheinland. The Bormann Treaty of Omega-3 was broken in an illegitimate invasion by the Kingdom of Bretonia, and Rheinland was now officially at war with Bretonia. Kusari was also gradually attacked and defeated by Rheinland through the neighboring Sigma systems, not least after Kusari Governor Tekagi himself was infected by a Nomad. Thus, Rheinland had only Liberty as a threat.
However, a freelancer named Edison Trent, an LSF agent named Jun'Ko Zane, as well as a small fighting group of Blood Dragons and the Order managed to end the nomadic war and defeated the Rheinland fleet before its total victory. Due to the heavy losses of warships, the pilots of the Rheinland Military concentrated on being among the best in the galaxy. Rheinwehr pilots became such good pilots that mercenaries came as Fortune seekers to hunt down individual pilots until mercenaries were banished from Rheinland as a whole.
The Corsairs were confronted with Rheinland when they tried to flank their arch-enemies, the Red Hessians, because the corsairs were not able to defeat the Hessians in Omega-5 and Omega-41. While many of the Corsairs were ace pilots themselves, the "Road to Rheinland" campaign, as it was called, failed because the former admirals Krieg and Hiltraud, as well as Unteroffiizier Schprokets, fought back the attack by tactical superiority. In a brutal final battle at Sigma-13, the Brotherhood was defeated.
When Rheinland discovered that Liberty was attempting experiments with nomadic materials in the Omicron systems, the leaders of Rheinland made it their business to convince them that the goal of studying such materials should only be to destroy the Nomads. At the same time, Rheinland was struggling with a cell and infected soldiers, called "Das Wilde", which strengthened their position. Liberty ignored this warning, however, which led to the war between Rheinland and Liberty after the publication of this information.
When the war broke out Rheinland had to realize that it was now Liberty, which had the largest fleet at its disposal, as well as many talented pilots. Even though they were always outnumbered, the Rheinland pilots stayed in the war for a long time. The losses were more on Liberty's side, but the damage that Rhineland suffered was not to be underestimated. Thanks to many elite bomber attacks by the Rheinlanders, Liberty was often weakened in the fight with Rheinland battleships. However, Rheinland had to admit defeat in the war in the end.
In the year 824 A.S., Nomads, disguised as Gas Miners Guild members, began a terrorist attack on the Fulda border station adjacent to Sigma-13. Rheinland quickly responded to this avoidable attack and declared war on the Gas Miners Guild. At the same time, the Rheinwehr continued to advance against the Corsairs in Omicron Xi. The cards turned halfway, however, when Kusari also declared war on Rheinland to settle the ownership of Planet Saigon in the Sigma-15 system, which was claimed by Kusari, the GMG, and Rheinland.
Rheinland's domestic politics underwent a major upheaval during all this time. Protests against the corrupt government, which were in the hands of lobbyists and made democratic change impossible, caused a strong rise in the urge to re-institute a monarchy. As a result, a coup was organized by the imperialists, which wiped the corrupt elements out of the government and was supposed to turn Rheinland into an empire again. The remnants of the federal republic, including parts of the military and especially the Büro des Marinenachrichtendienstes, split from the new government and fought against the imperialists.
