Anything that can be exchanged for something else will be assigned monetary value. If not by the creators then by the users.
POBs were broken the day they started to consume more time than money. POBs are virtually indestructable because the cost of killing one is through a rediculous investment of time. Find a way to kill POBs with cash.

Anything can have monetary value between players for sure. I just think it should be no better than oxygen or water
Well with that we’ve got two options. The first is we inflate their value, resulting in the same problem just with thousands of units instead of hundreds. You’d also need somewhere to store all that data. This would mostly limit who can utilise it to those who own a POB.
Alternatively we lower the cost of what they can be exchanged for. Player requests would go through the roof. It would also beg the question: what’s the point?
I never understood why you can't just cut out the middleman. Game Masters pull out a certain amount of credits from the ship you want the guns on, and then you get the guns or whatever else you paid for. Alternatively just make all that stuff (besides things like contrails which I'm pretty sure can't be just equipped on your ship) available to the general public by making it obtainable in the game in some way or another. Even rare Freelancer IFF-ed npcs wandering around that would drop it on death would be better than Scidata.
But seriously. Alot of people can fork out for a Battleship, CAU and heavies all before breakfast. Sell special guns at several hundred mil a pop. The extra boost in trading would be a welcome sight to pirates.
