It's really up to the RP'er... I have a few human crewmembers, mostly bridge staff and engineering staff - other than that the Aldebaran is ran primarily by it's AI codenamed CROSS.
Yea there is nothing in the game codes that has anything do do with capital ship crews and stuff like that but all of the ships do have one is just Rp. I dont think that it would be possible to have huge battleships run by computers tho. There is just so much stuff involded in make something that big work, you need many human minds and not just for combat situations either

I see you haven't downloaded your free trial Fnordette, Verg..
They're mouthy, but they can run the whole shootin' match.

Or is this feature not included in the trial version Mal?

LOL, Majk., That's our little secret. The "shoppin" algorithm is de-activated during the 90-day "free trial" period. If at the end of 90 days, the user does not install the "full" version, the shopping feature will activate and drain the user's Net account in short order. The only cure is to promise her a permanent home and an allowance.
I started out with 22 mil this morning, went through the unknown and delta, had to stop at every place along the way, its been days and i have less than 10 mil to show for it. Darned Fnordettes anyhow.
LOL. Back on topic, I agree with QV, I just dont think it would be possible to runa large vessel without an equally large crew, you should read some of the older-style military sci-fi, some of the old authors have a really cool take on how ships would work in the space age. Personally, on my RP gunboat, there are about 20 people, but my dreadnought has over 3000. Alot of the old sci-fi is centered around ships that are so large that entire generations live out their lives about the vessels, but that really depends on what kind of system to system tralev the author used. Hope that helped.

Also, Look into Warhammer 40000 Battlefleet Gothic table top game. If you read any of the books writen about the game, It goes into lots of detail about space ship strategies and crews and all that fun stuff. May I suggest "Execution Hour"
Now do you see why when you select a BS station and hit F9 you get a *classified* for number of crew?
As for warhammer 40K space ships, you do realise that the smallest cruiser is about 3k long, of which about 1 k+ is the powerplant and engines?
Plus the guns have to be dragged into position, along with their blast shutters.
Not to mention the fact that 90% of the techpriests (engineers to everyone else) don't actually know how most of the technology onboard even works.
Hell, to start the plasma reactors they hit them with a hammer while chanting aload of utter gibberish.
And thats before mentioning the fact that the enlisted crew are mostly press-ganged, convicts and other expendable scum. The enlisted crew out-number the techpriests and officers (from petty officer up) roughly 15/20 to 1.
So unfortunately your comparision doesn't really work.
A computer can run the ship, it just has to have alot of help from robots. Plus have you any idea how much power would be spent on life-support for the crew?
All the A/C fans, lights, water pumps, consoles, entertainment equipment, recycling equipment, etc would use alot of power. The bigger the crew the more power gets drained by the life-support.
Say you have 1500 crewers on a ship, that 1500 lights running in the crews rooms alone, say 5 watts per bulb = 7500, and thats before you include all the other rooms on the ship and that theres probably going to be at least 4 lights in them.
It all adds up to a massive amount of power, replace the crew with robots and you don't need to have all that equipement draining the power.
Plus as alot of the capships vary in size your not going to have the same number of crewers on a dreadnought as you are on a rhienland BS.
