From chatting to balance people it sounds like the crosshair calculation is done based on the centre of the ship, which I imagine is mostly fine for Vanilla's purposes, but in Discovery where we can fly caps that's problematic as turret hardpoints can be some distance from the centre of the ship. Might have to chalk this one up to an engine bug that we'll likely never be able to fix.
E.g. (example from @Thunderer): The Valor is about 800 meters long. If it has guns on the very front, there will be an error of 400m in the calculation
