It's been about 7 years since I've truly played this mod and I'm looking to get back into it as I have a lot of free time on my hands and have nothing but fond memories. I just reinstalled the game and set up my first character(as much as I remembered how to do so).
Like I said, it's been years since I've last played so I really don't have much of an idea of how to progress. I'm getting wrecked trying to run missions in my /restart ship and have almost no money for upgrades or repairs even and keep getting blasted by NPC's which is hurting my ego quite a bit. I was wondering if y'all had any tips for making money quickly beyond the trade grind I'd prefer just setting up one character so I can put all my focus into developing their RP as that's the aspect I'm most interested in, rather than character hopping to make money. I'd like to do everything to come up from nothing on the same character and trading just doesn't sound like something I'd want to do, especially since it takes time to even just set up a small transport.
I'm sure that sounds whiny, however I'm hopeful there'll be better alternatives all these years down the line. I'm willing to bite the bullet and just do it if it comes to that, though I figured it couldn't hurt to post and ask!
Anyways, any insight or tips or all-around information on how things have changed significantly would be phenomenal but I'm sure I'll pick it all up quickly enough. It feels good just seeing this forum format and logging into the game after so long and I'm excited to get back into the game and I'm sure a bit of grind is a part of that so I'm not afraid of that at all! Just want to make sure my time is being spent as efficiently as possible. I look forward to seeing y'all in space

Glad to see the community still is helpful as ever.
Welcome back! If you want to work up from nothing then the vet package probably isn't what you want.
Does your opposition to trading exclude mining, too? Make sure to use all the tutorials in the help section.
Failing that, take on cheap missions until you can handle the harder stuff; killing NPCs and missions have become severely more financially viable. Work with teams, join a faction, all of these will accelerate your progress. But if you want to work up from nothing it's mining, trading and missions, and you'll have to do what you can or what you're good at with that.
Or you could busk with RP outside Manhattan and see if anyone tosses you credits.
EDIT: He's right though, it's hard to read. There are very few places that you'll find centred paragraphs for a reason.
EDIT 2 ELECTRIC BOOGALOO: Oh, I see you've also previously received the vet package. Are you deleting these things?
Only kidding obviously. Doing missions, ironically as it may sound given your situation, is actually amongst the top money making, if not actually best, methods.
You can ask for a loan, to get a big capital ship or something of the sort, go do missions, pay up the loan, and then carry on money making.
Also, do check out the Vet package thingy, can be very useful.
Im sure the vet package will help you out pretty good from the start.
edit: cant help it but lmao

I appreciate the response, and yeah I briefly tried to make a comeback a few years ago before some real-life things came up and sidelined games for a few years. I completely forgot about the veteran package to be honest, but I'm not necessarily looking for handouts as I don't mind working for my own credits. That's half the fun. I've just traded to death and it sounds like I have some better options nowadays anyways, which is what I was hoping. Just alt-tabbing to FLCompanion every 5 minutes now that I've lost all my knowledge sounds like a drag haha. Grifting people outside Manhattan sounds like an exciting way to earn some money and I'm going to give that an honest shot tomorrow to brush up my RP.
Also sorry for the center align guys, did not realize how much of a cardinal sin it was here...
