LES MARSEILLAIS
18:00 UTC, 18th August
D/E5, Languedoc
Languedoc was many things; a stranger to war, however, it most certainly was not. The exaggerated death spiral of the dying Kingdom of Gallia had brought many famous clashes between the Royal Navy and the Council, while the scheming Corse and the radical Maquis watched and acted from the shadows. Names changed, but the shape of war remained the same; now Tokugawas carved their way past Nimes in the wake of de-fanged Valors. There was a crucial difference to this Languedoc, however. In the wake of the Confederation's fall and the rise of the Minarchy, the Unione Corse retained much of its enterprise but gained a new responsibility; defense. Those few who held a stake in keeping the Confederation afloat had long since signed with the Defence Forces, but others who remained with l'Unione proper knew that this was unlike the Second Civil War; the only arms trade that the Kusarians would tolerate with them would be on the field of battle.
The Maquis, however, disagreed only with the Kusarians on principle: the Confederation should be disbanded only by one blade, their own. And so, while their paths had long diverged from the Second Civil War, some of the less radical and more xenophobic Maquisards were more than happy to join the wing of Corsican craft that now skulked their way through the Herault toward Nimes. The damaged station had been given little more than a token rearguard element, as the brunt of Kusari's firepower was forced into Dauphine in the hopes of a sudden and complete victory. As the harried defenders would soon come to realize, however, the squabbling remains of the once-proud Kingdom would offer anything but.
