I'm curious as to how one joins a player faction. Do I simply purchase an ID? I am not that interested at the moment, but it would be nice to know in the future.
Take a look here for an list of all official player factions and here for all unofficial player factions.
The vast majority of factions possess recruitment threads where you apply inRP. So you got plenty to browse and read, I guess. Enjoy the life as indie though, it's always the best for starters. The player faction ID is just obtainable by faction members who already have a player faction ID on their ship by the way.

You can just play NPC factions by grabbing their ID. Groups, you need to apply to them. You'll recognise them as a group if they wear a tag or have an 'official ID'
It's usually easier to get to them (as they are looking for members) and they are more willing to help beginners. But they tend to be less stable, and don't have their own ID that you are after is seems, just unique tags

e.g.
NPC Faction = Liberty Navy. You can type /restart linavy or grab their ID on any Navy base and boom ...you are in Navy
however you are not in a PLAYER faction or associated with anyone. For that you need to apply to [LN], 5th or 46th player factions on forum - you get accepted, get into their discord and become a player faction member with responsibilities, ranking structure etc.

No, I understood. I was talking about the questionable chat. Sorry for the confusion. Also, I've been playing Freelancer for years.
