Taking the 'discover' out of 'discovery'.
Even if it's been there for years, it's still brand new content for new folks, and what's better than a system with a rich history and no real reason to be involved in outside affairs when you're just starting out in a mod that literally calls itself 'Discovery'.
I think it is better for overall gameplay to have less traveltime to get from A to B. I think Skorak nailed it, these systems could be dead ends for people to still discover while not giving anyone that has already seen Baffin once just an extra 150k extra cruise distance to get from A to B
That was the intention with Baffin, and is what we are planning for one or two other systems.
Yes, Baffin does need another way in/way out which is why is was a shame that the link to Newcastle was removed. What is wrong with a short cut link? It would more interest to the system. Many systems are just short cuts from 1 predominate system to another.
Back when I was a noob here, Mal was one of the first to make me feel welcome. He accepted my ignorance, and supported a few of my half baked ideas. He even adopted one of my alt characters that was meant as nothing more than an occasional narrative driver & made it his own for the rest of his life.
After he was gone, I eventually came to realize that every character I have is TAZ-adjacent in varying degrees...& one of 'em is a full-on bankshot homage (albeit through the dark little mirror of my psyche.)
Point is, Mal was, and still is a massive influence on me, and I'm just a bit player that still loves this place.
His mark on this community over time is much, much larger than most people realize. Baffin is more than a memorial & deserves better than to be shoved to the side, treated as a graveyard for a dead man, left to rot with bulldozers waiting just outside the cemetery gates.
It deserves to live...& it deserves to live well.
I wish I knew a better, more positive way make my case.
It's just that Baffin, in a very positive way, is a ghost in the machine that if destroyed, would take away a chunk of something important from this community that can never truly be reproduced.
I didn't know Mal well, but we did chat ingame a couple of times. A nice enough guy - definitely one who walked on his path.
Baffin is a worthy memorial to him and other players who have departed this plane of existence. Please do not alter it futher.
If the jumpholes can't be returned to their previous configuration, than at least spread them out. At a minimum the Coronado jumphole should be restored.
I dont think anyone wants to remove Baffin as some people are pretending. But we shouldnt cater too much to nostalgia of people who arent really playing anymore by keeping buffer systems as buffer systems that don't exactly make gameplay and traveling better for people who are actively playing.
There are many ways to keep Baffin as is without making it a buffer system one is forced to travel to, which only prolongs travel. It could be a sort of "easter egg" system that is even hinted at in rumors (bar characters and/or wrecks) outside of Baffin. Baffin itself could be kept exactly as it was with the same connections (or even more exotic connections), just the JHs on the other side that lead to Baffin are in locations that create what ever travel/trade balance you want. For example just move the outter JHs far off plane so current trade routes arent affected by them. Wrecks and npc bar char infocard could reference the locations and maybe even introduce some Mal or Discordian quotes.
Good point...you don't NEED to delete systems so much, especially cool ones like Baffin and Vanilla systems... even kill jump holes ... Just make the travel distances longer profit maximisers don't have to go through them.
Same with Kepler...I feel like you should uncuck the Kusari Jump hole? Just move the holes and make bigger gaps between tradelanes so it takes considerably longer to go through
That way commodities bought and sold there can still be valid as you can tinker with prices
