It totally could have been someone in the Unioners, but I havn't had that kind of approach to piracy personally since 2019-ish. It was definitely the wrong approach.
I believe in positive experiences being a two-way street a lot more nowadays than I did back then. The only time I'll play hyper-defensively is when smuggling, or when showing a new player the ropes (I tend to become quite suspicious of veteran players when I'm helping a new player find their feet. Vets sometimes have a way of making new players feel unwelcome). Even then, it's an InRp defensiveness, and I'll usually take excessive risks in my gameplay in order to foster encounters.
I will avoid ganks and all that.
