The majority of items in Discovery are on the plane while a few items are either above or below the plane. Off the plane. However there is no method known to me how a player can gauge how far above or below the plane he is.
Therefore is it possible for something, however simple, that can show the player how far above or below the plane they are. In fact an altitude meter or indicator showing that they are above or below the plane and as a bonus just how far above or below they are.

Yes but no good while you are flying. It is a command that has its value to use while static.
The /pos command works whether you are static, moving in thrust or cruise and even when travelling down a trade lane.
It will give you something like this: Position -22142 261 54108 Orient 178 38 -177
The highlighted figure is the important one. This tells you how much you are above/below the plane (+ve figure = above, -ve = below).
