I don't see a problem with it as long as he's capable of controlling the ship and himself at the same time, which he should be, however it wouldn't be all that much fun for him (and you) if he got a Barghest without a challenge. Do you think you could have a job for a fairly good Lane Hacker? Such that he could be awarded the ship if he gets the job done and covers any additional costs (extra credits for you for all the logistics and management).

Gunboat... Let's say, I feel less willing to conduct business with Red Hessian Army. We earn quite good money smuggling for them, however I remember rumours about old fights for diamond fields in past, so I'm afraid of "random" bomb in their gunboat (or gunship, does that matter anyway?). From more practical side, I suppose your gunboat is lighter and easier to support economically in general, making it quite better for solo piracy, extortion, hit-and-run and traffic control operations.
