Now for the people who don't know what Ubuntu or Linux is, then you wont have this problem...maybe. Basically its a free OS.
Anyway, on to the topic. For any of you using Skype on Ubuntu (or any Linux OS for that matter), you might have noticed that Skype isn't in the repository of Ubuntu or Synaptic, at least not for me. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10, and for some reason, (probably Microsoft`s problem, now that they bought Skype) it crashes when you open it and seeing that you can get it through the 2 main repositories any more, you have to download it from the web page. But still doesn't work after re-installing it. I only use Linux at work so I'm not really bothered much, but its nice to know (and I had some spare time on my hands).
So my question is, has anyone found an answer to this problem or why its happening all of a sudden?
I probably know why, just one word really...Microsoft. But If there is no solution, not one I know anyway, then now would be a good time for a OpenSkype, don't you think?
Ps. I think there is a Skype-like version for Ubuntu but I don't know what its called.
' Wrote:Have you tried installing previous versions? I hear that can help, though I am unsure what Ubuntu's version is, I'm still new to it myself.
Tried that, with 2.0, but any page I go on says either the packet cant be found or redirects me to the Skype page and there's not much help from them, seeing that I can only download the Beta, witch is stupid, a Beta they call the "latest release", very smart.
Anyway, the answer is no, doesn't work, but thanks anyway.
Ok, for any of you that were having the same problem as me, witch I doubt, there is a simple solution.
The reason is that Skype has found a small error and released a patch to fix it, but only for the Windows version, not Linux, or Mac either I think. So all you have to do is go into your personal Skype folder (witch is hidden, so use Ctrl+H) and delete the shared.xml file, and there you are, fixed. (/home/"Username"/.Skype/shared.xml).
Nice to know im not the only one with Linux. To be honest, the only reason im using Windows (although, Win 7 is great), is that Linux/Ubuntu has got compatibility problems with most games i play, Wine has its limits. But once you can play Win games on Ubuntu, im switching directly to Ubuntu cos'...its freeeee!:yahoo:
