For quite some time, the Foundation for Law and Government has watched the developments between the House Bretonia and Rheinland with ever-growing apprehension. It would appear that they have finally reached a head.
The Foundation has always prided itself on being apolitical. The squabbles and vendettas of politicians are only our concern when they affect the welfare of the masses, regardless of the nation in question. But this new conflict, as did the conflict with Kusari, has brought to our attention the threat it represents to the Foundation itself. Based on Planet Cambridge, and nominally a Bretonian organization, we are as liable to be assaulted as any other group operating within this House.
However, the mission of this Foundation cannot be swayed by power politics. To ignore the plight of humanity in general for the sake of patriotic expedience is something that one wishes mankind had left behind at Sol. Sadly, this does not appear to have been the case at all.
I have seen for myself the conflict at the border. I have heard from numerous sources of the commerce raids conducted in the border systems with Liberty. The common theme is that there can never be such a thing as neutrality in war. If we fight for the interests of the few, we inevitably injure the many.
For citizen bodies so brutally at odds with each other, the idea of peace and cooperation seems all too alien, and perhaps even treasonous. This is understandable; to their knowledge they are fighting an enemy which would prefer all but their complete extermination, and to channel hatred into energy to direct against such an enemy is a natural human response.
That being said, governments which overtly encourage such a thing are not liable to suffer the same feelings, as they are in control of the message provided to the masses. Once wars come to their bloody conclusions and the nations involved seem to have returned to normal, the people of those nations tend to view their old enemy with a new found respect, understanding that they, too, suffered the same hardships both on the field of battle and on the home front.
A government that openly derides, slanders, and encourages the hatred of another nation has no such cool-down process, as they tend to stay in power well after the war's conclusion. From the infamous Treaty of Versailles, to the Europa Peace Accords, antagonistic governments have propagated the cause of hatred and continued aggression above and beyond the traditional defensive response. With hindsight, we see that they were responsible for the wars which resulted not long after the previous conflicts.
Any government which openly demonizes the people of another nation is wholly to blame for future conflicts and their escalation.
The Bretonian Queen, Carina I, has since released the following statement:
"We are fighting to save the whole of Sirius from the pestilence of Rheinlandic tyranny and in defense of all that is most sacred to man."
If there remain but a few men and women in these colonies who realize what such a statement truly entails, then perhaps there's yet hope for a resolution to this madness.
Otherwise, cooler heads do not seem to have prevailed. Bretonia now faces a war on two fronts, with a military barely holding its own on the first. Rheinland, too, faces a war on two fronts, and while in a better position overall, cannot afford to maintain such a struggle against the likes of Liberty. These two nations, spurred on to war by the words transcribed above, are on the verge of destroying each other.
Apolitical the Foundation may be. But to remain silent in such times is tantamount to complicity in a crime far greater than any one man, let alone one nation, let alone all humanity, can bear.
The Foundation stands ready to intercede on behalf of any parties caught between these brutal conflicts. Our resources are comparatively limited, but at the very least they shall be applied towards a goal truly worth the struggle.
Thank you for your time, and may God preserve us all.
