Embrun is an older Normandie classBattleship built in 794 AS. Although less efficient in action then the newer Richelieu class Battleships, the Embrun has been retrofitted with the latest technologies to help overcome these deficiencies. The vessel was originally deployed to the northern systems of the Bretonian theatre in 819 AS with orders to prevent Bretonian flanking attacks from Newcastle and to probe the defenders' positions for weaknesses. In response to the renewed offensive of 822 AS and a general redeployment of Tau assets to the front line, the Embrun was moved to the Manchester system.

There, the Embrun served as a forward operating base for Gallic vessels in the system whose orders were to stem the flow of commerce and reinforcements into New London as part of the “Starvation Doctrine.” The Embrun displayed a measure of success in this task after appearing to destroy the newly commissioned HMS Gwent, yet despite the victory, Embrun came under rapidly increasing pressure and mounting casualties as Bretonia desperately attempted to dislodge the vessel from its beachhead.

With its tenuous position maintained, the Gallic Royal Intelligence has been granted control over Battleship Embrun and its fleet. Charged with the same directive yet given looser operation constraints, the GRI has taken up the task with ruthless efficiency.
