In many ways similar to its now dismantled sister station of Montpellier in Languedoc, Luneville was built to maintain and secure the mines that surround jump hole leading into the dangerous Outcast space. By the time the Outcasts themselves arrived, the mine field was already in place. Having no means to penetrate it, the Outcasts simply avoided the area, establishing Genoa Base in Tau-37 to keep watch over their side of the field.

Unaware of what lay on the other side, the minefield was eventually breached in 817 AS by a surprise Council strike from Lorraine. Their method was as crude as it was effective: A large engine salvaged from a derelict Navy cruiser was grafted onto a dense asteroid in the Sarre nebula. While Council and Maquis raiders distracted the bulk of the GRN's Lorraine forces with a diversionary attack on Metz, this asteroid was sent straight into the center of the minefield. This unconventional attack succeeded, creating a wide path through the mines all the way into Tau-37. Starved of reinforcements, the Luneville defenders were unable to restore the minefield. The Council later came to regret this as the Outcasts arrived, first in a trickle, then a wave that Gallia, in the midst of its civil war, was powerless to stop.

Supply lines to Luneville have been reinforced by the newly repaired and combat ready Epinal, but efforts to restore the the minefield have so far proven futile. This is due not only to near constant Outcast strikes on the base, but Maquis attacks as well. Although the Maquis have no love for the Maltese, it seems the continued presence of the Outcast raiders in Lorraine and Burgundy taxes the Duchy greatly, something the Maquis have a vested interest in.

The biggest threat to the facility would come from not the Outcasts, but the Kusari Navy, which invaded Lorraine in mid 827. As a military facility, it was deemed an acceptable target for the KNF, and the station was subsequently captured after intense fighting, causing damage to the base. The base has been locked down until it is deemed safe.
