The Planet Metz is just inside the habitable zone, and only receives enough light to warm the equatorial regions above freezing. Here, the warmest summers rarely exceed 20 Degrees, and only where the warm waters hold sway over the weather. Inland, thousands of kilometers of glaciers and snow raise the albedo of the continents such that the continental bodies of Metz, even the most equatorial of them, are thoroughly glaciated. Icy fall winds from the higher altitude interior falls onto the lowlands, disrupting the local climates.

Most of the economic activity on Metz somehow supports the Royal Hunt, as organized by the Office Royal des Eaux et Forets, in a centuries long plan to introduce large coniferous arboretums overtop the reasonably bare microbiota of the planet, to take advantage of the amazing views of fjords, circques and hanging valleys carved into the coastlines as a hunting preserve. While some large grazers have been successfully bred for the climate, such as the Aurochs and Mastodon, the most prized hunting is of animals that the Planet's ecology cannot yet support, the great cats, which the OREF raises and then introduces to the wilds for a few weeks before such a hunt is to be held, at great expense.

While the climate is not ideal, during the Lorraine blockade much of the greenhousery that had been dedicated to expanding boreal forests across the lowlands was turned over to agriculture to support the system. The acidity of the available soils made this a very risky time for Lorraine System, as any shortage or bad season could have led to systemwide famine. Since the blockade, the greenhouses and nurseries have expanded, but nowhere near to the amount to make the planet able to support long-term systemwide agriculture.
