Digital communications largely replaced printed materials in business, government, and society, but electronic communications can be tracked unless extensive, rigorous, and sometimes faulty safeguards are used to erase the digital path back to its origins. Printed propaganda material is untraceable, and also can be distributed in ways that digital media cannot, such as leaving it for others to find. It is also nominally more difficult to dispose of, since it cannot simply be erased.
