Soon after settlement, Bretonia needed raw materials, and Leeds was quickly recognised as the most resource rich system under Bretonian control. Companies were given royal charters - near carte blanche - to develop the system any way they saw fit, while worker were handed generous incentives to move to Leeds and act as the planetary workforce. Over the centuries however, unchecked industrial progress has lead to significant environmental pollution as exemplified by the omnipresent smog clouds that blight the system. Bretonia Mining and Manufacturing (BMM) operates the bulk of planetside mining, smelting and manufacturing facilities while Borderworld Shipping (Bowex) handles the transportation of finished goods through Bretonia. In recent years, Bretonia Mining and Manufacturing profits have slightly dropped on the planet as they are forced to pay for expensive clean-up work, but this positively has lead to the average life-span of a Leeds planetside worker raising to 51.
