On the day of their arrival in Sirius, the Colonials were forced to make do with a limited array of equipment. While initially relying exclusively on strike craft operating from large base ships seemed adequate, soon, during the Dymas administration it became clear, that more options were needed. Most prominently - medium-sized warships. What began as theoretical study, considered by some unnecessary became a clear, almost desperate need the moment the Colonial Fleet started encountering the Maltese Huguenot-class destroyers, predecessors to the ubiquitous Stortas. The intended specification called for either a large battlecruiser designed to deal with Maltese raiders in close combat or a much smaller warship that would perhaps not match a Huguenot in terms of firepower and armor, but outperform one in terms of terms of mobility in the difficult environment of the Taus. There were high hopes for the long-awaited ships and even higher expectations. Unfortunately, while the Argus battlecruisers failed to even remotely meet performance requirements with only a handful produced, the later completion of the Thanatos-class, the slow rate of production and the resulting, negligible impact on the overall situation in the Taus led to the entire class being perceived as a mild disappointment. Its fortunes turned perversely after the Fleet's most devastating defeat in the initial stage of the Gallic invasion. No longer desperately needed to fight a continuous battle against the Maltese - the surviving cruisers could focus on tasks they were initially designed for on a scale fitting their remaining numbers. As the Colonials rebuild, the Fleet cruisers are being used very sparingly to constantly probe the Royal occupation forces and cause and cause as much damage as circumstances and available means permit.
