Brief History

The 101st Ghosts of Razgriz began as a science/exploratory squadron some 230 years ago; it was originally the 101st Spectres, and headed by the legendary Edmundo Razgriz, an astrophysicist notable for his incredible contributions to Singularity Physics and applied quantum engineering. The original purpose of the squadron was to explore the newly formed jumphole into the system shortly thereafter entitled Omicron-85. The Jumphole likely formed as a direct result of the unusual supernova that destroyed the planet later titled Corsica and collapsed into the small black hole the restricted military system is famous for.

The Omicron-85 supernova is unusual in that it was very small and very, very restrained-hence it shattered Corsica instead of vaporizing it-and at the same time generated a stable quantum singularity, more commonly termed a black hole. Why it imploded as such is a subject of frequent discussion; most theories revolve around the concept of a Rogue Singularity (also termed a rogue black hole), in which a black hole moves at incredible speeds outside of a regular orbit around the galactic core and collides with another object. This could have dulled the explosion while stabilizing the position of the Rogue and giving it mass enough to remain stable at relatively stationary speeds (relative to the galactic core). 85's second star has since been rapidly (relative, by which we mean a small decimal point every year) losing mass to the singularity.

Edmundo was a very inquisitive man and, using his military commission, attempted to create a team of scientists and engineers intent on the construction of a faster-than-light drive via their extensive knowledge of astrophysics and applied quantum engineering. Their approach was to directly study the potential of using an artificial quantum singularity to compress and expand spacetime-a literal warp drive. The experiment culminated 180 years ago in a massive array constructed deep within the asteroid cloud that had been the planet Corsica before the unusual supernova. The experiment was also a collossal, though not total, failure-it managed to accelerate a probe, along with a 500-meter-wide coring of the cloud, well beyond lightspeed, and in doing so exploded, blowing a massive void in the Corsica cloud, leaving small pockets of shrapnel and a small singularity of unknown nature. Said seems to be some kind of small white hole, in that it emits large quantities of radiation across the whole spectrum. For reasons unknown, this radiation does not penetrate past the void.

The original scientific version of the Ghosts of Razgriz was shifted to regular duty shortly after Edmundo died in 640 A.S. His corpse, as per his request, was cast into the black hole off of the newly constructed shipyard, titled Corsica after the former planet. Many of his research projects allowed spatial enhancements in the construction of starship weaponry, shielding and engines, most of which remain unique to the heavier Outcast capital ships, manufactured solely at Corsica, even today. The black hole was named in his honor. In the next hundred or so years the 101st saw a series of almost forty commanders, most of them very intelligent, yet very aggressive. They participated in numerous campaigns across Omicron Eta, participating in several crucial battles to maintain the Outcast line in said system, and at 720 A.S., upon destroying the Battleship Namura, were elevated to Guard status. In 784 A.S. the 101st, as a direct result of the destruction of three fourths of the 66th at the Maltese Navy of which they were a part of, were elevated to the status of 101st Maltese Navy, the third of five of the Outcast fleets.

In 789 A.S., Kristina Pryde took command of the 101st Navy. Kristy Pryde is notable for being arguably the best fighter pilot the 101st has ever had, with the potential exception of Bernarde Fokke; we will never know who was better. Kristy had over 200 kills to her name, and to this day, years after she disappeared, has a fifty million credit bounty on her head, one of the highest in history. Kristy Pryde's whereabouts are as of today unknown; sightings have been reported in Gran Canaria's bar, but there is nothing to suggest the credibility of these reports. Little is known about her past; it is known, however, that she was easygoing and humorous, always up for a good practical joke. All we know about her dissapearance is that she married and fell off the radar 48 hours later.

in 798 A.S. Bernarde Fokke took command of the 101st Maltese Navy. All we know of Fokke is that he was half-Outcast, half-Zoner, born a Zoner, eventually rising to the rank of General in the AW before returning to his homeland to serve in the Navy. He rivaled Kristy Pryde as a fighter pilot, though who was better we will never know; the two have both disappeared. Fokke's capabilities as a commander were superb, and troops were reportedly so loyal to him as to desert the squad and search for him when he disappeared. Official cause for Fokke's discharge were embezzlement, but most pilots who knew him are of the opinion that he became involved in a squabble over ego and lost; he was very vain. It is ancient history now, though.

After Fokke's disappearance in 815 A.S. he was succeeded by Miguel Marron, a milder, aging commander with connections in the corporate world. He retired in 816 after a scant eight or so months, retiring with a fat pension to a fishing boat in Ravenglass. Halfway during his term the entire Maltese Naval Flag and high command was relocated from the Fourth Fleet to the Third Fleet (the 101st), making the MNS Rainerio the flagship and the seat of power for Amirraglio Barilla, current head of the Maltese Navy.

Maria Angelella Dattaglia Bonello is the current commander of the 101st. Command was recieved after a decade of distinguished service a sensor officer and then the commander of the MNS Maria Ruth. Breaking the tradition of the last twelve commanders she is not a superior fighter pilot, with only marginal skills in a Sabre. She prefers to command operations from a more strategic view of the battlefield, eschewing direct involvement in battlefield operations. She's had to eject too many times for her comfort. Quiet and reserved, she is easily identifiable by her unusual features-albino, but with powder-blue hair, a result of Cardamine mutation-and her preffered dress, an all-white suit consisting of a fitted blazer and the rather unusual addition of a skirt and gymnastic tights. She acts as direct adviser to Amirraglio Barilla in addition to her duties as Commander of the Third Fleet.

In late 816 A.S. the squadrons executive officer, Lope Rainerio, married and retired early. They let him keep the Sabre.
