As part of the Gallic Royal Navy's initial campaign in Tau space, the Crayter Republic system of Tau-44 was targeted and conquered in 818A.S.. The Oblique served as both a defensive emplacement and a firm reminder to other groups in the region of Gallia's claim. However, as the GRN pushed farther along in their ongoing conquest, their forces were worn increasingly thin in the borderworlds between Gallic core space and the front lines in and around Bretonia.

The Oblique and the majority of its fleet shocked the Taus and Gallic High Command in 822 A.S. by defecting to the Council in a bloody coup. While speculation regarding the cause of the betrayal is rife, it is believed the Council had infiltrated the ship's junior officer cadre over a period of months, while brutal orders issued against the natives by the flag staff had soured the disposition of the enlisted crew. Whatever the case, by switching sides, the Battleship Oblique and her taskforce shattered the Gallic hold on Tau-44, in favour of a new Council-dominated status-quo.

Oblique's new commanders also reached out to the Crayter Republic to gather and coordinate enough forces for a joint strike to recapture and hold the entire system. The strategy hinges on capitalising on the thinning of Gallic defenses in remote systems and the notion that the main fleets of the Gallic Royal Navy are too focused against Bretonia and Liberty to divert much by way of support.
