The Kusari arrived next, and selected the region near the Crow Nebula. Much to the surprise of the colonists (who were hoping for planets with considerable landmass), the bulk of the planets in the area were very similar to their old lands: little land, abundant water. This was a blessing in disguise, however, as the Kusari quickly created businesses to farm seafood and hydrogen gas.

The House of Kusari occupies seven star systems, and is ruled by a representative democracy (as the other houses) with a one-chamber parliament and a Shogun as the representative/political leader. The graceful and majestic group of the universe, the Kusari consider the whole more important than the individual, opposite of [[Liberty]], and are very strong when faced together. Their ships are light but maneuverable, but make for a potent enemy if facing large numbers. Their ships also have very little cargo room, even less than [[Rheinland]]. The Kusari also have an Emperor, however he fulfills more of a spiritual role for his people than a political one. The old ruling family, and a group of loyalists called the Dragons fight the government in order to return their people to the "old ways", whatever those may be.

The house of Kusari occupies the largest number of star systems in Freelancer. Spread over six star systems are: New Tokyo, Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu, Okinawa, Shugoku, and Tohoku. New Tokyo is the capital system of their empire. Their space resides within large nebulas, and thus their economic backbone is supported by mining the various gasses to be found. Kusari space may well be the most beautiful in Freelancer, and could be worth the time exploring to see all the various sights.

Kusari fighters follow the same class pattern as the other houses, and they are typically very small and very fast. With the decreased mass and advanced engines, their fighters are very maneuverable, and can fly rings around any other ship in Freelancer. However, the shields and weapons are potentially the weakest of all houses, and are very dangerous to fly without taking full advantage of their maneuverability. Kusari ships are graceful, sleek, and beautiful; definitely the best looking. Many of their ships feature large thin fan-like structures that add architectural interest.

Main article: History of Kusari

Controlled and contested space

Kusari lays claim to as many as ten star systems (New Tokyo, Kyushu, Shikoku, Honshu, Hokkaido, Tohoku, Hiroshima, Fukuoka, Tau-29 and Tau-31). Out of these, four hold colonised planets: New Tokyo, Kyushu, Honshu and Shikoku.

Despite the relative proximity to the Sigma systems, Kusari military do not operate in the area, giving leeway to the fiercely independent Gas Miners Guild, on which the supplies of H-Fuel to Kusari rely.

Territorial claims

The Tau-23 and Tau-31 systems are considered as under the protection of Kusari since 812 A.S. This resulted in a state of war with the Kingdom of Bretonia. Currently the Kusari Naval Forces are in near total control of both Tau systems, with planet Harris being the last Bretonian controlled base left.

Government and politics

Kusari is a constitutional monarchy led by an Emperor as the monarch and head of state, and a house of representatives from all the populated planets with control over the government. The Naval Forces have formal control over unpopulated systems, aside from the bases present in those systems.
