Amiens was the third planet colonized in Gallia after New Paris and Orleans. This is one of the reasons why Picardy, despite being located near the edge of Gallic space, is considered part of the Core Worlds. However, very few jump hole paths were found leading from Picardy to systems located farther from New Paris, and space exploration continued in different directions.

Amiens was discovered even earlier than Orleans, in 48 AGS. The planet, however, proved to be slightly less suitable for human colonization than Orleans. Further research showed the presence of extensive resource deposits. The first settlements on the planet were founded in 204 AGS and belonged to mining companies searching for easily accessible places where the planet's riches could be extracted from its crust. Years later, some of those settlements grew into cities with multi-millions of residents. The resource potential of Amiens was not nearly as impressive as on other known resource planets like Marne. However, the initial mining efforts caused massive pollution that resulted in slight temperature growth on the planet. Scientists multiplied the effect by deliberate climate changing efforts, resulting in a 10°C temperature growth everywhere on the planet except for polar regions by 300 AGS. This relatively small change became critical to make living conditions on Amiens far more profitable. Civilian colonists poured in, attracted by very cheap land and real estate costs accompanied by massive government investments. Since the colonists needed employment, industry grew quickly. It became more profitable to process Amiens ores locally rather than use off-planet facilities.

By 400 AGS, Amiens became a well-developed world that no longer resembled a typical resource producing planet. Large cities were built, and the planet's population reached two hundred million people. At that time, Picardy's economic growth was slowed by rapid developments in other systems. Later, however, development of the Gallic Border Worlds boosted Picardy as one of the primary gateways into Burgundy, which affected Amiens in a major way. Amiens was one of the main suppliers for station construction in the Border Worlds. Moreover, many colonists who formerly settled on Amiens moved onward to space stations and, most importantly, to Marne. In the decade before and after 550 AGS, Marne absorbed dozens of millions of Amiens' inhabitants. The population has decreased gradually since then, with Lyon, Marne and Le Mans taking Amiens rank among the most populated worlds of Gallia down to sixth. The economy of the planet is currently far from its most robust, with many industries either abandoned or working at half of their full capacity. The unemployment rate is rather high, as is the rate of unrest and opposition with the current central government. This resulted in Amiens being one of the primary places where the Council recruited its members and raised the funding for its operations.
