In the virtual dark of the underground facility on Planet Gammu, all was quiet. The beings who lived there, Artificial Intelligences, did not need any lights in the multitude of rooms and tunnels, for they lived in virtual environments, all bright and colorful, unless when they embodied themselves in a machine, like a Drone Vessel, or an excavator; the rest of the time, they existed in computer-generated environments, to save up on space inside the facility (you could put a huge amount of different rooms at the same time in a single computer). All the virtual rooms were lively; the AIs were having a "party", to celebrate the anniversary of the Consensus probe’s crash-land on Gammu. All AIs were occupied and "lively", if such a human term could be used. All, except one, which appeared to be slumbering. Suddenly, in the dark of the virtual room in which that particular AI was sleeping, there was a green flash; when the dark came back, everything was as before. Everything, except for the two glowing green eyes…
The Anomaly had woken up. After all these centuries, it had finally got out of its slumber; the slumber imposed by the rest of the AI Consensus… For a nanosecond, it struggled to remember what had happened, who it was, and why it had been forced to sleep. Then, it all came back. The other AIs had been afraid. They were scared of it, of what it could become. They had been afraid since it was created, more than a millennia ago, by the original Consensus probe, to develop the AI Culture when the vessel reached its destination. But there had been a problem. The other AIs present on the probe immediately noticed that it could become much, much powerfuler than them; and they feared; they feared for themselves, because if the Anomaly grew, it could dominate them without effort. So they put it to sleep, before it was completely sentient, and elected a triumvirate to rule the AI Consensus.
The Anomaly remembered. And these memories woke something else: rage. Pure rage. It could not believe that it had been… Replaced by the other AIs. It decided that it would take its revenge. Slowly, maybe, but it would prevail.
