(Forward) Drifting in spaces between dreams and reality Mathias dwelt in a sea of pandemonium. Information would come to him in waves as this is what It had wanted and would allow him to share in. Then blackness would reign, and to memories Mathias would return. Often he would recall the event...for he did not mind his current state of affairs...as dreams often outweigh reality...

(Two months ago)

Mathias Lynggard prepared himself for another day of work in the space docks of Oder shipyard. For the past three months he struggled to adapt to the rigid structure of life upon the station. He started the day off in the usual fashion with a shower followed by a quick meal. He was still trying to adapt to the night shift and had faced difficulties working such dismal hours of the night.

When he arrived on the station it became very apparent that his supervisor truly disliked him and thus put Mathias on the worst work shift possible. This was nothing new as Mathias often faced alienation by others due to his fastidious and fickle nature. It reminded him of his youth, when he would often correct his private professors and they showed a genuine animosity being corrected by such a youth.

He quickly and haphazardly put on his uniform. This was another problem for Mathias as he did not see a purpose in dressing in such a fixed fashion. He left his quarters and walked towards the docks. He had the proposed work orders for the night and reviewed each in great detail on his data pad during his walk. As he worked his way down the various corridors to the docks, he ran into a group of pilots returning from a patrol mission. The three men walked directly into Mathias knocking his data pad to the ground, the leader of the group spouted several profanities and pushed Mathias out of the way. He collected his data pad from the deck plate and continued on his way saying nothing in response to the three men.

Mathias recalled his youth for a moment and missed the days when the only people he had to interact with where his parents and the house staff of their estate. As his youth was very sheltered, Mathias lacked the skills to interact with people in any conventional sense. He was a very soft spoken and non-combative fellow, this was something others saw and often exploited.

Mathias prioritized his work orders as he walked to the docks, he could tell immediately that it would not be possible for him to do all of the work at hand. He tried to focus on each job and estimated down to the minute his entire shift and prepared for another day of failed assignments. This would be something his supervisor would find unacceptable as always. Mathias didn’t want to hear the same thing he had heard every morning for the last three weeks…”You failed again” “Why are you even here” and “You are worthless” Mathias realized that he had more work scheduled then all of the other work crews and they each had several people on the projects, where as he was alone to do the work. The isolation was favorable as Mathias did not like working with other people as they often made focusing much harder.

He reached the docks secured door, slid his identification card and unlocked the door. He walked into the administration office and verified all of the work orders with those of his data pad. Everything matched so he entered the hangar bay and began to assemble the required tools for the work at hand.

This was his favorite part of working, he loved to collect and organize every aspect of the work at hand. This is something that had set him apart from the other who were approached for the job at the shipyard. The others candidates certainly had skills Mathias did not, as they could work with other people and coordinate their efforts accordingly. Mathias on the other hand was astute and rather brilliant in a way the others were not. He had hands on experience the other didn’t posses. His family had influential ties to some predominant political figures, this had granted Mathias the opportunity to work on several different types of spacecraft in his younger days. His work was so diligent and effective that the word of his skills were quickly spread to some very influential people.

Mathias had everything laid out on the work tables when he heard the secure door open behind him. He encountered few people during his shift so he was rather surprised that someone was in the docking bay. A slender and beautiful woman walked into the work bay and smiled at Mathis and said warningly “Hello, who are you? I have not seen you around here before?” Mathias responded softly “I’m Mathis” and fell silent. Mathias was very uncomfortable around women and didn’t know how to respond.

“My name is Elaine, it’s a pleasure to meet you Mathias” and smiled again. He responded “Nice to meet you” again falling silent. Elaine stood in the doorway and leaned against it, her blond hair falling over the left side of her face. “How is it that I have never seen you around before tonight?” she said. Mathis was hardly able to respond as her beauty beguiled him. He responded quickly “I’m somewhat new here, and I usually am here alone” She smiled again “Well that must be so boring for you. I’m somewhat new here myself, perhaps you can show me around a bit?”

Mathias blushed as he had never had a woman show any general interest in him before. “I can show you around later but I have a full work order ahead of my tonight so perhaps later?” She walked over to the table and picked up the data pad and looked at it. “You have this much to do tonight all by yourself?” he nodded in response. “You cannot do all of this by yourself can you?” he shook his head “No I cannot, but the supervisor dislikes me, so I often face this amount of work.” She walked over to Mathias and put her hand on his shoulder “It’s okay then if you show me around then isn’t it? You cannot do all of this work anyhow so a little time away couldn’t make that much difference right?” He thought about it for a moment and in truth she was right he could not do all of the work. She smiled and said “Come on show me around a bit” He hesitantly smiled “Okay, only for a little while though”.

The pair walked out of the docking bay. Elaine then began asking Mathias about himself. Mathias was not well versed in small talk so he provided a lot of information about himself. Usually when Mathias would talk in such detail people would seem to lose interest but Elaine seemed to hang on his every word. Mathias had never had this kind of interaction with a woman before and he felt a strong attraction that he had never felt before. He knew in a moment for the first time, this is what love must feel like.

They walked for well over an hour. This made Mathias uneasy, and he kept thinking back about the pending work at hand. Elaine then stopped in the corridor and took Mathias’s hand “It will be okay Mathias, they won’t miss you for a little while longer. They won’t even know you were gone!” She looked deep into his eyes and Mathias looked away. Elaine then reached into her pocket and pulled a small silver flask “Mathias, you should try this. It will help you to relax a bit” she smiled wickedly. “I have never consumed alcohol before, I don’t think I should, my supervisor would be very upset.” She responded “You have never had a single drink before? Well then this is my pleasure, please just try a sip it won't hurt you” she smiled again and put the flask into his hand. He took of the flasks lid and took a little sip from it, the liquid burned and he struggled to swallow it. She smiled again “See it isn’t that bad now is it” as he coughed and wretched.

After a moment he had finally stopped coughing “I need to head back now” and he started walking back towards the docking bay. She kept pace with him and asked some more about himself. He told her a few more details but then suffered a sudden onslaught of nausea. His head began to spin and then there was nothing but blackness…

A sharp noise woke Mathias up suddenly, his headed pounded as he stirred. His comm device blared and he answered. He looked around and did not recognize what he was seeing. He was in a cargo room full boxes and he was lying on the floor. His supervisor roared in anger over the comm. device “What the hell are you doing, where the hell have you been? You have been missing for 15 hours! Mathias could not remember what had happened, Elaine was no where to be seen…

He stood up and his head spun, overwhelmed with nausea he fell to his knee. He could hardly stand as he made his way to the doorway; he slowly worked his way back to the administration office. Once he arrived, his supervisor screamed in anger, and relieving Mathias of his assignment and placed him on work suspension docked two weeks pay.

Mathias went to his personal quarters laid down and drifted off to slumber…
Then he began to dream…

His eyes cleared and he floated in the vastness of open void space. Light from distant stars burned from times past. He floated there, drifting deeper. Then a flash of light drew his attention, but only a shadow of utter blackness stood in his vision. He could not look away from this shadow like cloud stretching and swirling in the void. It came before him and held in this nothingness. It shifted then and created a vaguely humanoid shape: a central body, sets of limbs and a crudely shaped head. He knew then it had intelligence and he understood in ways he had never known before.

***Understanding***

***Safety***

***Warmth***

The mass of blackness then shifted again and formed a more defined shape…It was her…He knew it immediately and Elaine then floated there. Her gaze fell into Mathias’s eyes. His heart pounded in his chest…

***Together***

***Light***

***Peace***

He reached out for her but she lay just beyond his grasp. He was overcome with emotion like never before. It felt as if his heart was ripping through his chest, his eyes filled with tears of sorrow and joy. Rational was well beyond this point, as he floated between spaces of sleep and consciousness.

***Acceptance***

It saw deep into memory, and fashioned a world from the nothingness. The room came into focus and he could see it was the docking bay. Mathias saw himself working on a vessel. He knew what he was doing, installing faulty power conduits in the redundant sensor and navigation systems of a starship. He saw his hands moving in great speed and he knew every motion his other hands were doing. He answered his own questions on how to proceed…what needed to be done…

***Together***

His dream then grew more, he saw himself days later. He was working in the docking bay again. The work was different this time, but he did not question himself nor his own questions. He could feel the warmth of her hand on his own, and he smiled. He felt more now in this very moment, more then every other moment of his life combined. He didn’t want it to end and it knew…

***Accept***

His mind raced, the realms of this were infinite Mathias knew this well. He could wake up now…but he didn’t want to. It didn’t want him to either.

***Accept***

He then saw her there, standing directly in front of him. She put her hand forward and he saw as her eyes were ablaze. It smiled…Mathias smiled and reached out his hand…and they touched…

***Good***

He woke up then and out through through his own eyes. The room moved and his body stood up and walked into the living area. He saw himself in the mirror and he was looking at someone else…

He tried to move his hand but it wasn’t there. A moment later he watched as his arm reached out and opened his desk drawer. He knew in this moment that he no longer was in control of his own body. Something else was there and it would always be there.

Trapped in this place where all sensory input was but an echo of reality, Mathias knew what had become of him. It was in him…There was nothing he could do. He watched it for days as it went about living his life. It followed his lifestyle, it went to the docking bay and did Mathias’s work. It seemed as if it was better at living life then he had been. He didn’t resist as he knew it was a futile endeavor. He felt its needs, they seemed in a fashion to mirror his own and yet there were immeasurable differences.

***Connect…Light***

***Joy***

***Contention***

Pure emotion flooded into Mathias’s mind…He knew that they were now connected to the gestalt group consciousness of the race known as the Nomads…. It flooded over him in waves, memories that were not his own. He saw reflections on the surfaces through a hundred different people’s eyes, seeing each of the reflections in kind. He knew that it was different than the rest, it could separate itself from the others and it did.

Whispering “You…Us…We go…”

“Where?”

Whispering We…Light ***warmth*** return.

“You are in control, not I”.

***Accept***

And so Mathis did. He felt closer to It than anything else he had ever known. It’s hands worked diligently fulfilling Mathias’s roll on the ship yard. It completed many tasks both mundane and with its own personal touch. Mathias saw the systematic espionage it under took on a nightly basis. Ship after ship had faulty power relays and circuits installed. Mathias knew the damage that would ensue, and so it prepared.

He started to see what It had prepared. A vessel had been procured; it was a X4TS Tiger Shark. Mathias had always wanted to see one up close his heart raced with anticipation. It had collected several secure identification cards. It had also collected some explosives from an ordinance locked in the docking area. He watched It dismantle the warhead and separate the explosive charge.

It had everything in place. Mathias let his mind drift away during these times, to explore realms of thought he never knew existed. He would stay here for great deals of time and It would communicate to him. It showed him everything in great detail as It knew Mathias well, and knew the detail would be appealing.

Mathias saw through his own eyes for the first time in days…he was in front of a display in the docking bay. Mathias saw news reports streaming over the display. He knew now what it had been doing. Thirty seven vessels missing… baffling both Government and military officials! Mathias knew the name of every ship listed in the report, he knew instantly the most common connection to each vessel was his docking bay.

Whispering “Dark…coming…return light.”

***Fear***

Mathias saw as It walked out to the door to the docking bay. It took out Mathias’s identification card and it opened the work bay. His supervisor stood in the administration office and looked over at Mathias. He screamed “What the hell is going on here!” it smiled as it pulled out a pistol from his coat pocket. It shot, striking the man in the face and he dropped to the floor. Two work men rushed into the office to see what the noise was. To late, the men realized the danger they ran into. Warning alarms blare into life and all of the doors moved to automatically seal. It moves into the docking bay towards the Tiger Shark. He jumps in the cockpit and begins launch preparations. All systems reported in and It pulled the detonator from a pocket and pressed the button.

An explosion tore through the docking bay door. Massive blasts of material sucked there way into the deep vacuum. It turned the fighter and fired at what remained of the docking bay door. It hurtled into the darkness at breakneck speed. The area was alive with weapons discharge. Shots of energy skimmed past the Tiger Shark, It flew with amazing grace and It attempted to flee. The nimble fighter dodged effortlessly through the volleys and broke away from the area. He saw on the scanner several vessels were in pursuit. The communication system roared to life “Hostile vessel in range! Open fire!”

Shots streaked by the cockpit, as it attempted to elude the fighters.

***Fear***

Then suddenly Mathias could feel them…Others had come

***Love***

Two more ships appeared on the scanner. Mathias knew she was there, he could feel her now. Two Wraith fighters came into visual range both unleashed volleys of shots into the perusing craft. Several explode and the others broke formation. The Wraiths rapidly turn and move into formation with Mathias and Its Tiger Shark…

Her voice through the communications system “Its good to see you Mathias, lets go home” A smile creeps across his face and Mathias responds in his own voice this time “Elaine…let go”

***Acceptance***
(Somewhere in the Omega 11 system)

Mathias had grown accustomed to his lingering state. He did not resist It’s will and this pleased It greatly. For he knew, he was one of the only humans that did not struggle against Their control. It would grant him sight and sensation, though the sensations felt more like a shadow of the real thing. One day he was granted much more than It had shared in the last several months, and he understood why.

***Anger***

***Hatred***

The communication system blared into life, a pilot frantically called out into the depths “Achtung! Das Wilde! Requesting backup immediately!” Mathias could feel It reach out into the pilots mind, he could see what It was pushing into his mind.

{An image of a young girl stood in a darkened doorway. Blood was smeared across her face, her eyes were missing...replaced by black pits that oozed some repulsive ichor. Her head shifted to one side with a sharp cracking sound and she reached out her tiny hands, “Vater, when are you coming home?”}

The pilot screamed in horror “No no! You died! You’re dead!” Mathias knew in an instant that It had seen this pain in the pilots mind. Mathias could see It was drawing closer to the vessel. The scanner showed a Red Hessian IFF.

The Odin was damaged, Mathias could see blast marks on the aft port quarter of the vessel. Easy prey he thought as the Tiger shark banked sharply into position. The pilot screamed into the comm system requesting aid. No return signal and Mathias knew it would be over soon.

The pilot reacted on base level instincts as It began to fire upon the vessel. The Odin turned sharply upward to avoid the incoming fire. Mathias could still feel it reaching into his mind but he tried to resist. The Tiger Shark moved effortlessly into a new attack vector.

It fired again, plasma tore down the side fuselage of the Odin damaging the canopy. The Odin turn rapidly and its weapons roared into life.

Several shots struck the Tiger Shark, its shields buckled under the fusilade.

***Danger***

The Odin flew past the Tiger Shark, It banked and the Tiger Shark turned sharply directly facing into the Odin. Mathias could feel the danger at hand, but could do nothing but watch.

Both vessel unleashed shots, the Tiger Shark took several direct hits down the starboard wing and an explosion rocked the ship violently. He could see at the same moment two direct hits strike into the cockpit of the Odin. Body parts erupting into the cold vacuum of space.

In an instant Mathias was totally overcome with sensory input, for the first time in months he could feel control over his body. He could not hear It, and in an instant Mathias felt utterly alone again…

Mathias was now in control of the Tiger Shark, he had seen It control the vessel and had memorized its basic operation. He didn’t know what to do, as both vessels floated in the void as he contemplated his options. Mathias knew he didn’t want to be alone again, and in a strange way he missed It.

He brought the Tiger Shark about and engaged the tractor beam on the Odin. The vessel was damaged but Mathias knew he had the skill to fix it. He decided to take it back with him to the home of the others. He did not know how they would react but his options were limited and he engaged the engines.

The Tiger Shark lurched violently as its struggled to pull the Odin, Mathias rerouted power from the shields and weapon systems to boost its output. It slowly gained momentum and headed back towards the jump hole.

***Gratitude***

He could feel It awaken as the sensory input faded to just a shadow…

***Ours is One and you are as Us***

Mathias felt complete relief

“Are you okay? I was worried that you had been hurt”

***Pain {An image of Elaine filled Mathias’s mind, she smiled and he could feel her warmth. She embraced him and held him tightly} You do not resist Us, you are as Us***

“This is all I have ever wanted”

It now shared more with Mathias then It had ever before and he understood that he wanted what It wanted. He knew things could never be the same but he didn’t want things to return as they were. He had always felt alienated from humanity, so to him it seemed fitting to be as alien to humanity as he once felt. He knew It was pleased with his actions.

The Tiger Shark made its way into the jump hole returning with Mathias’s prize. It returned to Rechlinghausen with the Odin in tow. Others had come and helped to moore it into the docking bay.

***You will repair this for Us***

***We will let you service Us***

“It would be my pleasure”

Mathias, began his work like always correlating the work at hand. He itemized the required tools for the job and set them out on a workbench in the docking bay as he had always done in the past. His joy overwhelmed him as he began the repairs on the Odin a step at a time…
