Admiral Golanski,
First, let me introduce myself: my name is David Starr, Advisor to the Board of Directors at OSI. Your previous communication regarding the research subject was forwarded to me by Mr. Kelly. He feels that I can perhaps have a better understanding of the situation.
You see, I stand in the middle between his businessman background and your more militaristic one. I’m a trader, but also Escort pilot. We fought together against the Wilde in Omega 9 not so long ago, you might remember. I was that last bomber pilot you tried to help escape. It was not possible to save my ship, but your actions allowed one IMG transport to rescue my escape pod.
That was to show that we recognize the threat that Nomads and Das Wilde pose to all of us. We at OSI understand and acknowledge your concerns. Until now, we had done nothing but put the nomad cells into storage in our strongest containment fields. If we really wanted only to profit from this technology we would have never contacted you in the first place, don't you agree? We know you would oppose it. We are not THAT naive.
But that was not our intention, really. Maybe the proposal was not properly worded, but that was just an initial idea, to be developed upon. In the initial communiqué about this subject it was stated that OSI would want the right to any commercial usage that can derive from such research. Perhaps that should not have been mentioned, not because you dislike it, but because there is a great possibility that nothing really usable could come out of it, or something deemed really too dangerous to be meddled with perhaps.
But no one ever talked about 'profit above everything'. We are a company, and we aim on profit of course, but as Zoners we aim on so much more than just that. The last year attempted occupation of Gran Canaria by the Corsairs and the Coalition, and OSI putting its few combat assets in the front line of defense, proves that our home and our families and the zoner way of life come first when related to our profit. You witnessed it first hand. And we still have not replaced all ships we lost in that opportunity. And we have three family pensions to pay until the children of our dead security employees get to 21 years old. Could've been much worse. But profit is secondary, when the Zoner way is in danger, or the whole human race for that matters. That's why zoners in general, and OSI in particular, have always supported your cause with everything possible: warships from those who have them, logistic support in the case of OSI.
You misunderstood our intentions, Admiral. OSI as a company aims for profit. But no company exists by itself, it is only made by those individuals that are members of it. And in our case we are Zoners. And as zoners we were aiming, first and foremost, to the safety of our families and everyone that lives in the borderworlds and deep omicrons. With a better understanding of this technology, the Order would be the biggest beneficiary, understanding is a must to combat an enemy. And of course nothing would be done without the Order consent. And in the remote case of anything with civilian use results from this venture, it would be limited to the Order and Phoenix and OSI, as members of the research team, and only with the agreement of the Order Overwatch, and no objections from Phoenix, it would be put into use, of course.
Also, you must realise that, when the 'commercial rights' was mentioned before, that does not imply automatically that whatever 'product' that might come from this research would start production and go to open sirius market right away. Of course not. That was never OSI's intention. At the most what we were aiming for was some breakthrough in energy efficiency, and the only thing OSI would produce out of it would be more efficient powerplants for Gran Canaria and Akabat, for an instance. And as for 'commercial rights' we meant that the Order would also need to consult us in the case you want to pass some knowledge to one of your allies. Not all of them are friendly to Zoners and OSI, as you know. Nothing more than that.
Anything that can come out of it that is not of militaristic nature would be only 'commercialized' between ourselves. And only with the Order consent, of course. And by commercialize I don't mean the simplistic meaning of the word, money, but that of collaboration and exchange of resources and favours between our groups, for the betterment of all. Because OSI would benefit much from Order having the advantage against Nomads and other Omicron menaces. A safer sky is always best in any circumstance.
So, Admiral, allow me to summarize all this:
- We would build a station, funded by OSI, in Order space, in a location that you find safe and secluded enough for that.
- In that station we would research those nomad orbs, with a mixed team of Order, Phoenix and OSI scientists.
- All of that under Order security and supervision.
- And anything that can come out of this joint-venture will be kept between ourselves, unless all the three groups agree otherwise.
Is that good enough for a first draft, Admiral? Anything you would want to add to that, or modify? Details can be worked later, like number of people involved, specific safety measures needed, and other points...
Lets put aside all previous animosity between our groups, and work together once more for the benefit of mankind against the nomads?
With your input, I will present this proposal in the next meeting of the Board of Directors at OSI, as we need to vote on such matters. I am sure we can get to a common ground…
Best regards,
David Starr
