"Arbeiter Rousse. At ease."

"I’m Vorarbeiter Kazuli of the General Exingency for Informed Strategic Tactics. Geist, for short. Ghost, in German.

We’re what you are.

Your file reads that you’re borderline, Rousse. Gallic Royal Intelligence’s stance towards the Unioners has ranged from co-operative to guns blazing. We are aware you’re still a representative of your people and that you’re embedded within our organisation primarily to gather intel on us, not make friends. That’s pretty incontrovertible. You’re a monarchist to the core and your general loathing for Sirians slips out at the bar.

The reason why the Direktorate is willing to accept the risk you represent, is because you’ve shown genuine curiosity in what we are, beyond the level that would be acceptable for espionage alone. You’ve bonded with your fellow Unioners and been an acceptable flight operative of the Liga. You havn’t let your Nation’s objectives interfere with the insurgency. If that’s because they synergise with ours, isn’t for me to call. Anyman can be part of the syndicate – that’s the working theory, if he pulls his own load. Ultimately it doesn’t matter if you’re a spy, if you’re also an Arbeiter first. It is my duty to turn you into one. Your kill count against the Separatists proves you’ve got that potential. We’re going to stroke it.

Because of that, we’re acting to secure additional supplies of fuel additives, once the tanks on your Lynx run out. You’ll be able to fly your own spacecraft on your own terms, since you havn’t taken to Sirian technology. Under conventional circumstances we’d have trained you in use of an eagle, Arbeiter or Sichel by now, but all of Pacifica’s flight training instructors are moonlighting as fighter aces against the Separatists, so we’re stuck with what you have.

In [redacted] hours, flight Arbeiter Riehl and any elements of the airwing we can spare, will climb you into the cockpit of your Lynx and go through some basic manoeuvres on our side of the Bering control Line. Nothing out of the ordinary; we want to see how you fly in your own spaceframe. Vulkan’s down in hangar three spoofing your transponder with an IFF masking chip. Your ship will read as any other Unioner fighter unless they get into active scanning range. Once that goes down, you’re going to have to talk your way out. Riehl’s wing will keep top cover.

We’ll be disabling your guns for the duration of the exercise – we’ve got zero confidence that the Lynx won’t blow up in our faces if we tamper with the loadout. Keep your mines and disruptors hot and trust in your escorts; it’s all you’re going to get out there.

Your name, Arbeiter. It might sound inconsequential, but we can’t keep you on our intranet with the known Pseudonym of a GRI agent. Rousse you can keep – there’s a few hundred thousand Rheinlanders with the same surname. The Union doesn’t discriminate over race, ethnicity, or nationality, but you’re going to raise questions if we keep calling you ‘Francois’ on public comms, or if the Lane Hackers backdoor our servers. You don’t sound nearly Quebecois enough. Pick a first name, German or English, Frank, Franz, Falke, something beginning with F so it stays memorable and you learn it fast, anything that has plausible desirability. We’ll update your fighter by the time we fly."

Bonjour Ghost,

I'll try to get the Lynx to fly, but I cannot make any promises. If I get it to work, then I'll attend the flight with it, and if I cannot get the Lynx then I'll use the Falchion that I've been provided with. It's quite a different ship, and I certainly do not enjoy flying it and feel like it's in no world comparable to the XJ-3 of our glorious Kingdom.

Indeed, I do not wish to use the Lynx' weaponary systems, as they are most certainly not compatible with the filthy Sirian Technology that is buyable at the civilian market, and the Syndicate's guns would need some tweaking before I would use them on my Lynx.

As for the Name change, I do agree to the fullest. However, only the name "Franz" sounds acceptable to me, as it is basically the Rheinlandish version of Francois. Any other name would be an insult to the person who named me Francois, and I do not wish for that to happen. And alongside the name, I would like to know more about the culture of the ancient Rheinland, the one you are, to my knowledge, trying to revive.

Francois Rousse

"Confirmed. Be advised, as the fighter takes damage and use, it will sustain wear. We do not have manufacturing facilities capable of creating a perfect skin for the Lynx as it endures wear and repair. The impacts already sustained by Tanner Ablation Scoring (TAS), means that Vulkan will likely recommend resurfacing the fighter. Fighter skins are covered with sensor nodules to provide the pilot situational awareness of damaged elements of the spaceframe, which will be painstaking to substitute. We'll need counterfeit spacecraft software elements with redundant backups to prevent the fighter's firewalls locking up on us. You'll be able to obtain them in Galileo - to be safe, buy a hundred Units. That'll give us enough leeway to fool the fighter's VI into not lobotomising itself."

"The result would be internally and structurally Lynx, but externally, it would be covered with the same reactive antishock plating that the Union coats all our proprietary designs with, from Arbeiters to Solidaritats. Even the cockpit glass and heads up display would be surrogated for Unioner anti-flash polymer. "

"I hope you like the colour green, agent Rousse. Flight controls and all other technical elements will remain as standard."

Bonjour Ghost,
I've got you what you were asking for. 100 Units of Counterfeit Software were brought from Galileo to Pacifica, coming with an extra 50 just in case you might need them for something. I have to tell you though, the Ragnar I used... was different. Liberty was as filthy and dirty as I've had it in mind from my service at the front-line, and I can imagine funnier things to do in my freetime.

On a sidenote, I hope that it is clear for everyone participating in this that taking any actual data, blueprints or anything alike from the Lynx will be deleted by myself, as it is to remain a vessel of the Kingdom of Gallia. If I find any data that belongs to le roi and the Kingdom only within the Syndicates Databases regarding the ship, I'll find the author and he'll face justice. However, the changes that you are going to make to the XJ-3 should be recorded, to guarantee that the vessel can be repaired after suffering damage. I hope that those terms are clear, and that you understand my reason for doing so as someone who loves their homeland and their crafts.

"Good. I see you're already embracing the pseudonym."

"Assuring self-repair will require total reformatting of the ship's nanorepair to recognise the vessel's new skin as part of the ship, and not battledamage. In essence, to prevent the ship from de-constructing itself mid flight, we will have to teach the nanobots to operate on a system that isn't quite the Roi's own Lynx. Unfortunately, EFL builds nanobots even more fastidiously than they do their spacecraft, owing to the fact that nanobots are potential near unstoppable weapons of mass destruction if abused. We will not be able to reconfigure them."

"Instead, we will have to build our own. Off-the-self Sirian nanobots will operate successfully, however we will have to make a few modifications we've aquired from the Junkers, to make the nanites more receptive to your spaceframe. That will require a shipment of robotics, Arbeiter Rousse. Eight hundred units gives us a sufficient stockpile to last for the next thirty five years, or until you return to your homeland - whichever comes first."

"However, I doubt you will have to obtain them yourselves. This is an opportunity to showcase your skills as a diplomat, Agent Rousse. Make contact with the Gloaming Flotilla. They will be able to provide."

Bonjour Ghost,

The task has been completed. I do hope that this shipping of Hardware will help you to change the nanobots to work in a fashion that they provide usefulness to Minuit.

On a Sidenote, if Geist is what you claim it to be, then I am sure that you can assist me with something. Monsieur Grier is currently tasked with researching a few weapons that I manged to collect over the years. The goal of that research is to check wether or not they will be compatible with the prototype. However, I must say that I am certainly worried. If those weapons turn out to be a failure, then the prototype will be unarmed. To prevent that, I have worked up a list of weapons that I'll need to acquire and as an intelligence wing you are surely able to help me with this. The weapons I am looking for are:
  • 2x Advanced Eliminator
  • 2x Destroyer
  • 2x Debilator Mk.I
Not only would I need those weapons, but I would also need to test whether or not they are compatible with the prototype. Is there someone you can recommend for this task?

" The promitory engineer of the design corps, signal designation 'Vulkan', will be able to assist you. He is preparing a brief on the required technical challenges to appropriately mate the weapons to the hull hardpoints. Vulkan is extremely capable, as are the rest of the Liga design board. Appropriately arming the vessel will require the fighter's hardpoints to be drilled out and replaced - Gallic hex hardpoints have six hundred years of technical evolution apart from our own offensive solutions. Even the best engineers in Gallia cannot overcome history in a matter of weeks. However, the modern flight four Liga Standard Hardpoint line will not integrate with your fighter's power systems either. The resulting solution may work, but it's going to be as expensive as a trainfull of artifacts."

"congratulations, Arbeiter Rousse - your fighter is a poster-child for false economy. A non-syndicalist society would have abandoned the project at this juncutre."

Bonjour Ghost,

First of all thank you for pointing out who to talk to about further research on the guns and the general plating scheme of the ship.

You're most probably right..Minuit certainly turns out to be more expensive than I had imagined at first. However, such prototypes are required to reach new levels of technological capability. Both the Syndicliga and I will most certainly benefit greatly from it, and as such I have determined that it is worth the effort.
Once the development of the Nanobots and the outer plating is completed, I wish for you to give me more details.

For the meantime I wish you best of luck,

Franz Rousse
