Manchester | Fort Winchester
17/11/825 AS, 09:28 AM

The black clad Marlin silently traveled towards Fort Winchester, after being cleared by the Harlow CIC to enter the secure area. Not only several weapon platforms were trailing the Marlin, but a veritable array of scanners kept taking readings of all shape and form so that the decision makers aboard the Fort would either choose to disintegrate or allow it in their berths. As the blast doors of bay number three opened, the weapon turrets resumed their pre-assigned alert position and the Marlin quickly landed. The red klaxons inside kept spinning until the bay doors closed and its posterior pressurization had finished. The Marlin, an already known piece of technology by the Bretonian Armed Forces, started its engine shutdown procedure, its HN-C11 engine stressing to downgrade its power, leaving a red plume as three men, fully armed and in tactical gear quickly ran towards it, followed by a four meter high combat exo that kept its heavy repeating blasters trailed at the ship. The exit side door, commonly known as the 'rat hole' by the pilots that had flown the Marlin, opened up and a lithe woman slid, not bothering with the support stairs that come out from the hull plates and landing graciously onto the bay floor. The men quickly saluted as they saw the pilots face and rank and issued the all-ok onto their comms. Three technicians appeared from a near elevator, and ran towards the Marlin to service, already issuing commands by remote to several robotic arms, that had come off from the bay's walls and ceiling.

Kaze Nelson Reidman Dagon stood in attention inside the Fleet Admiral's office, her pilot uniform, black, simple but already showing some wear with only her Commodore insignia on the collar. McIntire was silently reviewing a report and signaled her in, moments before. Obviously, he was not enjoying whatever he was reading since the frown was very heavy, indeed. He caressed his mustache, deep in thought and finally laid the data-pad onto his red oak desk, styled in the old Sol eighteenth century, heavy, robust and with very intricate details, reminiscing waves from a sea. Very fitting for the First Sea Lord of Bretonia, she thought. Her bionic hand opened up and closed into a fist, behind her back.

He put the papers aside and turned his attention to Dagon. "Take a seat." He said pointing at one of the armchairs in front of the desk.
As Dagon sat down he gave her a long look, apparently in thought, till she turned her attention back to him.
"I hope this meeting doesn't cause you any inconveniences but the matter is too delicate to be talked about over comm channels.
As you well know the Gallics are preparing for their final push into New London, gathering a fleet the kind of wich we never saw before. I know you burn to take them on and lead the Ark Royal into battle as well, but I have to deny you that. The Minister of Defence has contacted me last week and passed me new orders from the parliament."

He said, sighing.
"In short, we are ordered to prepare for the annexion of Gran Canaria and the while of Omega 49 if need be. The parliament deems this step necessary to ensure the survival of house Bretonia. I know what you think, we should rather use all we have to throw it against the Gallic juggernaught. I feel the same way but those are our orders and we have to comply."
He stood up form the desk and signed Dagon to follow him, moving towards a table with a map of the Omega 49 system.
"I ordered our engineers to make sure the Stirling is combat worthy once more, she will be the ship deployed in the system so we can use our modern assets in the battle for New London. For the northern theater she is a little too old but in the south she's still on par with what she might encounter. Any questions up until now?"
He asked while showing the designated spot for the fleet to stand by.

Her teeth gritted in a silent fury. For the past years, she has trained and been training for whatever would come regarding Gallia. And now, to see her effort, her fate denied in the last hour was borderline torture for her.

"Why me, sir?"

Was all the boiling hidden rage induced mind could say without showing sentiment or actually exploding. The bionic hand flexed once again, closing into a fist with all the strength that it could muster.

He sighed again, leaning on the desk, looking at her. "I understand that I am asking a lot from you but be sure that I would not do this if I saw any other option. Let me explain why, before you crush my inventory"
He pressed a button and the different patrol paths, stations and suspected hostile areas appeared on the map.
"This task is unlike anything the Armed Forces has done in my time of service. We're not defending our turf here but we're intruding in someone elses.
The whole situation in Omega 49 is extremely delicate. Our orders are to annex the planet as soon as possible and I can not imagine this will go down without violence. The main population on the planet consists of Zoners, Corsairs and Bretonian settlers. The latter will supposedly support us as the colony was threatened frequently in the past. The Zoners might be willing to negotiate, we will have to see about that but the Corsairs will most certainly not leave the planet on their own.
We have, in cooperation with the SIS, already made contact with the SCRA and are negotiating our spheres of influence. If we manage to come to an agreement, wich I do not doubt considering the current state of the negotiations, we will have the free hand to remove the resistance."

He said while showing some population centers on the planets surface and their defensive grid, or what the SIS could gather about it yet.
"This is where you come into the equasion. I can not give this mission to Steiner, he would probably strictly refuse to carry it out altogether, mind you the other admirals will probably not be happy about such a task either, nor do they have experience in offensive fighting and guerilla tactics.
You on the other hand do have both of that and do not take this the wrong way but you have the iron will to do what needs to be done. If I order you to remove the Corsair population from Gran Canaria you will not hesitate to do so for the Kingdom. Can you guarantee me that the same applies to anyone else in the Board?
We have been in a morally comfortable position for too long, many of those who hold a high rank now have never had to make uncomfortable decision."

He walked away from the desk, back to his seat, signing Kaze to sit down again as well. While sitting down he opened a file on his PDA and turned it towards her place.
"These are the orders I recieved. They are coming down to an objective without defining the means to get there, accordingly the parliament does know very well we'll get our hands dirty in this matter. I would loath to force you to accept command of the Stirling, but I will if I have to. We've been friends for years now, this isn't a punishment. Rather take it as a chance to build for a future after the war, to return Bretonia to its former strenght. Can I count on you?"

The stress on her jaw rescinded with each word that McIntire voiced. Not only he was a brilliant mind on its own, he had his way with words, no doubt. He did not painted the scenery pretty and fabulous, but true and raw. For years she knew he would get far, but she did now wonder how far he would get. And if she would follow him as she did everyday. Sighing, she replied and relaxing somewhat.

"'The darkest places in hell are reserved for those who maintain their neutrality in times of moral crisis.' That is what I think about the zoners, about the Hessians, about the Coalition, about our politicians. You need me to show a iron made wall in Omega-49, I will. For the sake of our people."

Yet, the problems kept rising in her thought. Her eyes trailed McIntire and she removed herself from the position of attention. This now was not a talk between the Fleet Admiral and a Commodore. It was a meeting between two strategists.

"I do foresee issues coming from the SCRA and Heinrich. They might try to falsely call upon themselves the high moral ground. An in force annexation of O-49 gives them the footing for such. So I do hope the political powers do have an agreement with the SCRA regarding that. But.. There is also something you need to see."

Kaze extended her hand and delivered a small data-chip to McIntire. He looked at it somewhat puzzled but placed it in his data-pad and opened up the main file, showing several readings, recordings and still frames of a certain place in Sirius.

"Since you gave the excuse for Weber to not use me in SIS operations, I have to.. use a network of my own to keep up with matters that transpire far away from our borders. In this case.. Frankfurt. Also, I am receiving worrying reports from Dresden. The Rheinland Government may well abandon it, giving it to the Hessians. Which may be.. troublesome."

Crossing her arms, McIntire leaned and sat at the edge of his desk, taking in the details of the intelligence report he now held in his hands.

He looked up from the report, the wrinkles that had befallen his forehead in the last years appearing deeper than usually.
"I'm confident our negotiations with the SCRA will be successful. Our interests in the Omegas align to some extend, moreso if Rheinland starts intensifying their relations with Gallia more publicly."
He said while sweeping through some of the files.
"With Rheinland engaged in a complicated conflict in the Sigmas the chance of them openly siding with Gallia in the war are rather low while their increased relations will probably make our negotiations with the Hessians and in turn the SCRA easier. Only time will tell, but I think they might open up opportunities for us going down this road.
The Hessians taking over Dresden should not be our concern though, they effectively controlled the bigger part of it anyways, I suppose the complete takeover of it will increase their pressure on Rheinland wich again makes a direct involvement of theirs on the Gallic more unlikely."

He put the PDA aside.
"My main concern is wether we can find a way to take over the planet without much blood shed, Massacres at the Zoner population are to be evaded at all cost. We will certainly try to convince them to give up the planet for some kind of reparations. Should this fail I'm afraid our orders are clear but until we have no other option we should not start this operation with sheding civilian blood. For the first step your task will be to secure the space around Gran Canaria and between izt and the jumphole connection. Any violence against our forces from any party needs to be reported to the Admiralty immediately, be it known enemies or new ones."
He stood up and walked over to a cabinet, taking a bottle of Gin along with two glasses out. Back at the table he placed one in front of Kaze and filled it one third before sitting back down and filling his own glass.
"But before any of this we need to find a fitting officers corps for you. Any suggestions?"

In her mind, she was already trying to create a reasonable timetable and operation of annexing not only Grand Canaria but also the entirety of Omega-49, minus the bloodshed and the delaying politics involved. Heinrich, Selim, Keller, a lot of very volatile variables aching to cause a situation, no doubt. But while kids discuss tactics in a war, men discuss logistics.

"I will require.. Captain Richard Harlowe, from the Norfolk. He's experienced in dealing with zoners, corsairs, hessians and the ilk. Also, the Merchant Navy 2nd Unit to handle the supply chain to the Stirling TF. The Hellbound would be a good tool in this, as its old systems are prepared for planetary bombardment, JiangXi being a prime example of its capability. Fully kitted in NEMPS too. Just a precaution, nevertheless. I am not in the business of slaying innocents, but if I must, I want to use the most efficient tools for it."

She picked up the gin glass, and although it was not her favorite beverage, it was slowly growing on her, over the course of the late night meetings with the Board and when mingling with the upper echelon of the Armed Forces.

"Annexing the whole system will fall badly onto the ears and eyes of the Coalition, and ultimately, the Hessians. I will contact the Toys and Games to prepare and to set up an early warning sensor system throughout Omega-49 so that we do not have.. unwanted surprises. So, in that regard, I hope the pencil pushers in the government are already contacting the Coalition and Hessians to give them a heads up. Lastly, I want the 2nd and 3rd Armed Infantry, alongside drop capable craft from the Merchant Navy, for planetary occupation. We must do it fast. We must shock everyone."

The liquid burned her throat harder than she was expecting. McIntire did treated himself well in that regard and the veritable barrage of request to enact the occupation of Omega-49, the first aggressive move in years of a long hurt beast called Bretonia. And Kaze was ready to go for the jugular, eyes and tongue.

Consider it done, I will issue the reassignment notices as soon as possible. I'll also add two marine divisions and a few rechon squads to the ground forces along with quick deployment craft in case you will need a more precise tool than a fully fledged invasion force. Manpower is really not our problem when it comes to ground combat since the drafting decree.
The Merchant Navy should be able to set up the buoy net you requested within a week or two, if they are not interrupted too much. While they certainly dont lack bravery they lack heavy guns to protect themselves. Bolstering their escorts with some more fighterwings would not hurt I suppose but that is for you to judge.
I agree that, if negotiations fail, we will need to be prepared to take over most cities planetside in less than a week. While the population reports differ quite a lot the most realistic ones speak of less than a million, minus the Bretonian colonists and those who leave the planet if things go south. Add to that the rather low industrial activity and we do not have to expect beeing drawn into a lenghty war in the population centers. However we need to expect a few groups to start a guerilla war against us should we not be able to come to an agreement with the Zoners. If we do I suppose most corsairs will rather leave for home than die on a remote planet.

He looked at the screen that covered nearly the entire wall opposite to his desk, showing the space outside the station like a window. He never expected to have to plan the invasion of a foreign world but now that he had to he started to worry about how easy it was for him. He liked to think of himself as a man with honour and values, both of wich he, as his conciousness whispered occasionally, was abandoning to follow this order. Gladly these moments of uncertainty got less the busier he kept himself.
I think we have talked through the main aspects. The detail planning is your job. I suppose it might take a little till the negotiations with the Zoners start and come to a conclusion, or till the War Cabinet decides we do not even contact them. One way or the other prepare to get the order for planetfall a month from now earliest, I would propose you have everything prepared within two weeks though, just to be safe. If you require ground reconnaisance I suggest you send the recon squads without uniforms. I would prefer no one can put blame on the Armed Forces for escalating things too early.
He emptied the rest of his glas in one sip and poured the remaining liquid of the bottle into their glasses.
Personally, I'm not sure how to feel about this whole matter. I do certainly support an expansion into the Omegas, these systems have been a hive of undesirables for too long but the target worries me. I had my fair share of dealing with Zoners and while they are neither very cooperative, rather extremely stubborn and they lack any sense for political situations, I do not conisder them a threat to the Kingdom. I will ask you to try minimize civilian casualties even if they decide to fight us. It is one thing burning a city full of Crosairs, they would do the same to us if they could but another if we reduce a zoner colony to ashes. Should we be forced to invade a planetary bombardment will only get my OK for Corsair targets. Should this become a problem we can still discuss it but do not act on this matter without checking back.
He slided the glass back over the table where Kaze caught it.
Any other matters we should discuss right now? I'm quite tired of talking about Gran Canaria, I've spent my entire day with this matter and as we haven't seen each other in quite a while I thought I could show you what we call an officers lounge here. I can guarantee you won't be impressed but the drinks are on me.

Catching the glass midway, the metal hand clinked against the glass, and as McIntire ended his question, she sipped the beverage once again, thinking in the last minute general details and going through the invasions she had planned in her mind. Leeds. Harris. New London. Cambridge. Sprague. Quillan. New Paris.

"For pre-deployment recon I already have a recon unit in mind. The 1st Light Dragoons from the Ark Royal. I know they are pilots, but I trained them myself and thus I know they can get a report compiled and done within the week without even making the zoners, corsairs and others look twice at them. The standard MO of insertion would be junkers for that AO, something we can get quite fast. With your order.."

McIntire nodded, looking at Kaze as he sat at the edge of his desk, hand in one pocket, savoring the gin.

"Good. Which leaves me to the two last issues on the desk. The Ark Royal. I have spent the last months training them, I hired veteran mercenaries not only to train them but also as a wildcard in any situation. They are ready and willing. To whom will I hand them? Also. I do not trust the backroom politics and deals made in the shadows by our politicians. Coalition, Hessians.. They do not mix with us. They are pariahs, fueling their causes by shooting innocents whenever it is worth it. Common pirates, but with a different color and speech. It will explode in our faces if we depend and allow them in our midst."

She placed the glass down and crossed her arms, looking at the window.

The more experienced fighterwings of the Ark Royal were relocated to the New London theater as quick response units, the Ark herself retained about half its snubcrafts though. Should you deem them essential for your operation we can relocate half of the ones at New London to the Stirling, the other half has to stay I'm afraid.
McIntire looked at one of the very few trophies he kept for himself, a sharp edged metal piece with a serial number on it. The piece once was part of the wing of a Thor bomber, that of Gunnar Cannonbreath to be precise.
I don't trust the Hessians either. I'm not sure if you're aware but I happen to be the one they shot first upon the start of our last conflict, sort of announcing the breach of our non agression pact by fire. But realistically we have the same enemies in the region as well as no majorly colliding interests, the least for the moment. In my eyes every day we keep the peace is benefitial, even if we return to war later on.
Meet them with the necessary cautiousness and there will be no surprises.
