The Kitakami is one of three identical ships built to the designs of Sakamoto Teiji on the eve of the Great Battle in 801 A.S., where most of the Blood Dragon navy was destroyed in a heroic stand to delay the nomad infested Rhineland armada's assault on the Kusari Empire. Her sister ships, the Kana and the Kiso were destroyed in the battle, but the Kitakami didn't even manage to reach it. It is suspected, that the Shogunate's saboteurs managed to infiltrate the new cruisers somehow, and succeeded in knocking the Kitakami's navigation equipment out of order at a critical time during the approach. The Kiso also reported a slight malfunction prior to the battle reinforcing this suspicion.

Long story short, the last anyone saw of the Kitakami for quite a few years was two weeks later at a nameless refueling station in the Sigmas. The proud cruiser was moored there, presumably for repairs and resupply, her crew on shore leave. The Sentai HQ learned of this stop from a police report on an investigation into a suspected hijacking that left a Captain Ishida Keiko, half a dozen of her crew and part of the stations Kusari security team dead, while an unidentified "private yacht" steamed out of the mooring docks at Cruise speed. Ishida Keiko was the first commander of the Kitakami.

Little is known about the Kitakami's adventures during the next six years. It is presumed, that she was wandering, her way hopelessly lost, in systems unknown to mankind with her navigation computers useless due to the sabotage. The crew, all 11 of them, who were left when the battered cruiser was hailed by a GMG supply vessel in Sigma 19.

The Blood Dragons were impressed, but utterly suspicious. The ship was written off as a loss, and the search for her called off years ago. When she did turn up, anything and everything from Samura to Nomads was suspected of foulplay in connection with her reappearence. Lengthy hearings, and endless quarantine procedures followed for the crew, while the ship itself was stripped to the last bolt and sheet of plating in search of boobytraps and stowaways. Nothing was to be found, and the crew's reports have been swiftly and carefully classified as top secret by the High Command.

The shortage of men and ships finally forced the Kitakami's return to service in 813 A.S.. As the only surviving officer, a junior navigator named Mio Shinnen was promoted to captain and two torturous years of being forced to again and again prove their loyalty to the cause while their friends and comrades fought and died in their place finally ended. Though, the Kitakami's loyalty after all the inquiries was practically unquestionable soldiers are a suspicious and superstitious lot. They nicknamed the Kitakami "The Ronin", and by all likelyhood would stick for a long time still.

The long journey lost in teh depth of space had further negativee consequences: a disease, perhaps some unknown radiation poisoning. The remnants of the original crew developped racking, violent coughs and their organs deteriorated quickly. By today only one of the original crew remains alive: Gentoi Matsuta.

Captain Gentoi, holds a deep hatred of the Kusari Navy. He is often heard saying that his blade - the ancient katana of his ancestors (that holds the insigna of a Junyo smelter), that he insists on carrying always - his blade will taste the blood of ten thugs of the Shogun for every drop of his blood spilled. His crew calculates that the disease-wrecked captain aims at a full battalion at least, most of it in revenge for his son, who after graduating from the naval academy found employment with the Gas Miners Guild and was soon killed by a Kusari Navy patrol on a makebelieve charge of smuggling.

Detailed description:

The Kitakami is a line cruiser. She's not the cutting edge of moders technology, not by a long shot, but as Blood Dragon capital ships are today, she is among the more powerful actually. Compared to earlier models her sustained firing capabilities are enhanced, her hull more logically structured and sturdier. As a symbol of power and resiliance the strategic value of the Kitakami is considerable.

She was designed to fly in formation with other capital ships under an effective fighter cover and take on a number of enemy capital ships in a large scale battle. Her anti-fighter capabilities are thus fairly limited. Her offensive capabilities are also mostly designed for full frontal assault, and fare weaker against flanking attacks. In the Blood Dragons' present situation where large scale battles among capital ships is not an option, the Kitakami finds employment as a system control vessel and base ship for smaller crafts, rarely leaving the Chugoku system or its immediate vicinity.
This ship must never leave the safety of the Blood Dragon systems without appropriate escort.
