The hollow whispers of the dark, steel corridors drifted eerily through the rural station. The soldiers were packed away in their individual boxes, sleeping soundly to the silence, dreaming the dreams of war. All but one, who sat reminiscing soundlessly upon the thin cot of his quarters. A flimsy, tattered photograph rest between his fingers, a small girl with a heartfelt smile and beautiful long chocolate hair falling down over her eyes.

To war we march as the morning comes,
Never-ending war,

The blades of light scorch the sky,
The unforgiving sky,

Bodies burn and children cry,
The tolls of war are paid,

Yet we continue our violent crusade,
Damn the consequences,

The puppet masters bark their commands,
The marionettes heed without word,

Dusk approaches,
The minds peruse the truths of war,

Unspoken the imaginations search,
Looking for the end,

The end will come with victory,
The commands echo,

The drug of slumber comes,
The doubts fall away as the day begins anew,

To war we march as the morning comes,
Never-ending war,

The man smiled in sorrow, gazing upon the photograph.

“If only you could quell this confused soldier’s turbulent mind. If only you could kill this loneliness, Draya.”
