Preface

Okamoto Yoshirou is a vivid example of the complexity of Kusarian culture, combining rigorous subordination and suppression of emotions, with sensitive soul and keen, even poetic one might say, sense of beauty. This essence is captured by the folk wisdom in a proverb “A person with cold hands has a warm heart” (//手が冷たい人は心が温かい - te ga tsumetai hito wa kokoro ga nukukai) He carries out his orders with a sense of duty to the society, preserving professionalism and avoiding fraternity with his subordinates or commanders. Outside of service he is a kind-hearted friendly person, treating everyone with equal respect without regard to social status. Albeit a bit shy and naive, Yoshirou often attends public events, giving preference to educational ones where he can learn something new. Despite seeming naiveness, Okamoto went through many professional and personal ordeals, from participation in the civil war to his wife leaving him, which left him scarred and seasoned. Believing that any obstacle can be overcome with the right approach, Okamoto puts faith in his abilities and dedicates his efforts to constant self-improvement for what is about to come.

Early Years

Okamoto Yoshirou was born on planet Honshu in 797 A.S. in the family of cadre military officer Okamoto Koichiro. His mother, Okamoto Yukiko, was a police officer for KSP but retired after giving birth to Yoshirou’s younger brother, Tomoya, to save money for children’s education in the future. Yoshirou himself was a second child after his elder sister Koike, so it was logical that mother deferred her career to taking care of the family. Yoshirou’s father Okamoto Koichiro at the time of the birth of the former was Kaigun-chuusa (//commander), a commander in charge of a gunboat-class vessel entrusted with patrolling the trade lanes near planet Honshu. When Yoshirou was 7, however, his father was promoted to kaigun-daisa, and ex officio was appointed the captain of “Takeda”-class cruiser. Being a rather high-ranking officer of the Kaigun (//Navy) and a son of a navy officer himself, Youshirou’s father wanted his son to follow his steps and by tradition enlisting in the military service.

Since the age of 7, Yoshirou was being prepared to become a navy officer like his father and grandfather: rigorous physical exercises, cramming physics and astronomy in school, and psychological disciplination by practicing martial arts as a hobby. Realising the importance of the future destined for him by his parents and their sacrifices to make it possible, Yoshiro did not object to his education and upbringing and did his best to achieve the set goals. It was only expected that he got accepted to the military academy at the age of 14 without any issues. There, Yoshirou continued his rigorous training that was already the norm for him, securing the advantage over other students with less strict upbringing. Youshirou graduated the naval academy at the age of 20 in the rank of dai-i (//Lieutenant) and as one of the most promising students in his class was appointed to serve under the command of rear-admiral Yamaguchi Shun piloting “Komainu”-class battlecruiser “Aso”.

Service on Aso

Okamoto Yoshirou served diligently and quickly learnt to apply on practice everything learn in the academy. The early years of his service coincided with turbulent times for Kusari. While “Aso” was mostly protecting Honshu from possible Blood Dragons incursions, it also saw some action against the Imperial Exiles. By duty of his service, Yoshirou had to participate in killing his countrymen supporting the Chrysanthemum Throne which he had been taught to protect at all cost. This left a scar on the soul of Okamoto who was torn between sworn duty to the Emperor and to the people and the State of Kusari which at that time nominally was a republic. The scar made Yoshirou believe that foreign influence in Kusari eventually leads to Kusarians starting to shoot other Kusarians, and thus it is better for the state to remain rather closed to external influence, even to trade. Internal strife, however, did not hinder his excellent service which was noted on many occasions.

Personal Life

Okamoto met the end of civil war in the capacity of chuusa (//commander). The newly reformed Empire of Kusari needed talented men more than ever following the devastation of military cadres brought upon by the non-stop from 813 A.S wars, and upon the personal recommendation of rear-admiral Yamaguchi to whom Okamoto at the time served as the First Officer, the latter was promoted to the rank of captain with the withdrawal from service on “Aso” to pilot his own ship.

At that time, in 825 A.S., Kusari was rapidly rebuilding after the devastation of Gallic occupation and the civil war, and Okamoto as a perspective young captain was presented with a rare opportunity to choose the ship he would actually pilot. The choice was either to commence his service immediately on a seasoned “Takeda”-class destroyed, or having to spend 1 year on the ground with reduced wage to eventually get to pilot a whole “Komainu”-class battlecruiser like his ex-commander Yamaguchi. Okamoto opted for the second option. The year on the ground did not pass lazily for Okamoto. He managed to buy an apartment in Minamito, on Haneda island, successfully invest his remaining capital for the future, and even get married.

He met his wife, Kimiko, on one of the forums organised by local nobleman Shimamori. Still torn by the guilt of shooting the supporters of the Emperor during the civil war, Yoshirou got political and started to pay attention to both local and nationwide political discussions. The ideas of “inward perfection” of Shimamori got to his liking, and Okamoto started attending events organised by the koshaku (//marquess). However, he also longed for care and understanding so it was no wonder that upon meeting an attractive woman on one of such political meetings Yoshirou fell for her. Naive and inexperienced in relationships due to always being away in space, Okamoto almost immediately offered his hand to Kimiko, who naturally agreed to an offer of a young and perspective military officer. The marital bliss did not last long, however, as it turned out that nor only political ideals of Kimiko were “slightly” more radical than his own, but also more important than family bonds. After only 6 months of marriage Kimiko fled Honshu to join Golden Chrysanthemums, stealing most of Okamoto’s savings to buy a ship. Such a move did not leave Yoshirou heartbroken, but rather deeply disappointed with his own naiveness. While not particularly overwhelmed by hatred towards his ex-wife in particular, Yoshirou grew to despise Golden Chrysanthemums who as it appeared from the note left by Kimiko were not simply looking for equal rights with men, but more for “a way to rid the world of patriarchy in favour of more civilised matriarchy”.

Left with little money to travel, Yoshirou got deeper into politics and became a close friend with koshaku Shimamori Masahito himself, pledging to support his cause politically if the opportunity arises. Discussions with the marquess made him realise that internal strife within the state is natural and that in the course of duty the necessity to oppose your own country men might arise. Blood Dragons, Farmer Alliance, and Golden Chrysanthemums are also Kusarians after all. While certainly it was still something to avoid, Yoshirou finally felt eased regarding his past and more optimistic about the future.

Current Situation

In April 826 Okamoto Yoshihiro was finally presented with his own “Komainu”-class battlecruiser with a fresh crew out of the academy as befitting a young commander. Entrusted with the protection of Honshu system and regular patrols to Shikoku, Captain Okamoto reserved the right to set up his course of actions by himself in the absence of urgent orders from the Military Office. His first use of such freedom, expectedly, was an offensive against the Golden Chrysanthemums.
