Chief Engineer Heinrich Hertz
Date of Birth: 778 A.S.
Height: 185 cm (73”)
Weight: 84kg (185 lb)
Hair Colour: Brown
(blackened by constant exposure to combustion engines)
Eye Colour: Blue-Grey

Born and raised on Freistadt Base, Hertz was forever inquisitive and inventive as a child. His parents were amazed at his problem-solving abilities and learning capability. Unfortunately his talent could not be effectively harnessed due to the lack of suitable educational institutions on the station. Nevertheless, attempts were made to nurture his abilities through home-schooling and instruction from the father, who had a background in mechanical and electronic systems.

As he grew up into a teenager, Hertz's passion for engineering rapidly increased as he had more access to facilities and assistance from his technically-minded father. He lacked a healthy social life; instead of tending to relationships he preferred to raise his spanner and fix ship systems. Despite this, Hertz managed to progress through his younger life and end up as a ship engineer on the smuggling vessel Hergig.

Through the day-to-day operations on the Hergig, Hertz was introduced to the Hessian movement. The smuggling Train's main shipping contracts involved the transfer of oxygen and blood diamonds to and from Hessian stations to Freistadt and Kreuzberg Depot. The crew were constantly interacting with the Rheinland revolutionaries; through convoy operations, cargo transfer and mingling opportunities on the two stations. Hertz fell in love with the romantic idea of the Hessian struggle. Through the Hessian movement, he would be able to further his passion for all things unliving, and be able to assist in mining, station and ship building operations. He always wanted a life filled with challenges; the Hammer and Pickaxe provided such a experience. As soon as his second season on the Hergig was over, he arranged a shuttle to Vogtland Base, to become a member of the Hessian movement.

Hertz quickly rose through the ranks of the Red Metall Association, the primary engineering organisation based at Vogtland. By the age of thirty-one he was a Chief Engineer for the entirety of the station's docking and ship maintenance facilities. Through interactions with his fellow Hessians, he learned the structure, design and function of the Odin and Thor strike craft. In particular, he was interested in the bomber craft. The immense amount of time invested in the design and production of such a complicated vessel entertained Hertz' mind. However, he had discovered several flaws in the design and implementation of the Thor bomber. Despite its larger size, the arrangement of key hull-composite structures reduced the overall structural integrity of the ship. Hertz set out to design a prototype bomber to eventually replace (he was assured of his engineering abilities) the Thor as the main bomber craft of the Hessian movement.
