Name: Ansgar Freyberg
Rank: Specialist
Branch: Marinenachrichtendienst, 2nd surveillance squadron
Sex: Male
Age: 26

Background information: Herr Freyberg was born on Planet New Berlin as the second son of Heinz Freyberg, a man serving as a Leutnant in the Rheinland Military. The Freyberg family is a proud one of its long-stretched military career, going back to many generations, first represented by Admiral Swen Freyberg, remembered for giving his life for the Vaterland in the Battle of Yanagi nebula. Ansgar's mother, Eva Klein, is a former Republican Shipping agent, originally operating on and around Planet Stuttgart, but she left her position to move to New Berlin and marry Heinz Freyberg. She is currently unemployed, but Heinz Freyberg's income has always been more than satisfactory to provide the appropriate living conditions for the whole family. Ansgar's brother, Dieter Freyberg, who is two years older than him, currently serves as an Officer in the Rheinland Federal Police.

Education: Ansgar has been taught to be a soldier all his life, not only because of his family's past, but because he came to a realisation that his loved ones and the values that his surroundings hold matter the most in his life. The only way to preserve these is to defend the integrity of his homeland with force and strike down on anyone who is a threat. After finishing the elementary school in the capital city, his father didn't have to ask him twice to continue his studies at the Muerwik Military High School and Academy, where he eventually graduated. Since he wanted to start the service of Rheinland as soon as possible, he didn't continue his Academic studies, but went to the nearest recruiting office to sign up.

"Ansgar is a natural, born soldier. His results, both physically and mentally, were outstanding during his High School years. He had all that was needed to become an officer, but he was too anxious to fight and he left off too early. Let's hope he'll return one day." -Hauptfeldwebel Andreas Hermann, Ansgar's training officer.

Service on the Karlsruhe: Freyberg begun his service on the Karlsruhe, where he performed border defense duties. He received special training for dealing with Corsairs and pilots of the SCRA, but he only had to employ his knowledge once. He was on a routine patrol led by Gefreiter Peter Kovacs and another Flieger. Just as were returning to base, they stumbled into five Corsair fighters escorting a captured Daumann transport. Gefreiter Kovacs ordered his pilots to begin a pursuit of the ships, which eventually entered a nebula. Even though it's highly recommended to avoid nebulae during a standard patrol, Kovacs didn't break off. As soon as the pirates realized their pursuers were outnumbered and they all vanished from the Karlsruhe's sensors, they used their advantage and turned around to fight the Rheinwehr ships. Freyberg's wingmen were quickly neutralized, he could tractor in the Gefreiter's escape pod, but the body of their other wingman was never recovered. Freyberg realised he stood no chance, so he gave full power to the engines and started evading his pursuers. He repeatedly attempted to establish contact with the Karlsruhe and request backup, but due to the interference of the nebula, the Battleship never received any of the distress calls. After many minutes of dodging the flak, an entirely unexpected help source arrived. The Unioners noticed the high energy signatures originating from the edge of the nebula and decided to send a patrol to check the source out. The patrol hardly took notice of the damaged Rheinwehr ship and shifted fire to the Corsair pursuers in hopes of getting their hands on the transport they were escorting. Flieger Freyberg used this opportunity to escape and land his ship on the Karlsruhe.

"I have no idea how Flieger Freyberg survived so long, while our ships were taken out like flies. If not for a fortunate turn of luck, such a talented pilot would be lost. It was all my fault, I'm not worthy of his life saving efforts. " -Gefreiter Peter Kovacs, Freyberg's wingleader.

"I wouldn't say the patrol was successful at all, we lost a fighter and its pilot... it was not all in vain, I'd say, at least we managed to discover a new talent among us. Freyberg's evasion performance is remarkable. I'm honestly wondering what he could do in an even combat situation. Give my regards to his training officer." -Oberleutnant Anna Fischer, Freyberg's commanding officer.

Service on the Westfalen: Two months after the Corsair incident, men were desperately needed on the Libertonian front. Freyberg volunteered and was accepted without a second thought, his former commanding officer, Oberleutnant Anna Fischer personally wished him good luck. Fitting in was not particularly easy, a lot of his comrades didn't think he deserves to be commended because he managed to 'evade' five Corsair fighters, although Freyberg never actually boasted with his deeds. This attitude changed as soon as the Flieger completed his first assignment.

The Westfalen recieved a distress call from the RNC Kaiser Friedrich, flagship of the 621th assault squadron that the ship was under heavy fire in Bering from Libertonian bomber squadron escorted by the LNS Victory, a gunboat assigned to keep the fighters off the strike team. Freyberg was ordered to form a wing with Feldwebel Leon Meyer and six other Wraith fighters to intercept the threat and rescue the Kaiser Friedrich. Upon their arrival, they found the Cruiser to be in a terrible state. Flames were erupting from most of its decks and it was literally swarmed by Upholder class bombers, emptying the content of their torpedo tubes into the ship's hull. Meyer's wing engaged the hostiles and managed to rid the Kaiser Friedrich of two bombers straight away. They didn't have to wait long for the interference of the LNS Victory, the gunboat got into range and opened fire at the fighter wing. Feldwebel Meyer's ship was hit by a projectile originating from the gunboat's forward gun and his ship blew to pieces. Hauptgefreiter Mann took command, but he was hit by an asteroid as he was chasing an Upholder. There was no third in command, communications to the Kaiser Friedrich were lost and the Rheinland fighter group was drifted into disarray. Only three fighters were left when Freyberg decided to take command and order the fighters to attack the gunboat instead of messing around with the bombers.

[13:51:21]Fl. Reichner: Verdammt! We just lost Schultz to that gunboat!
[13:51:32]Fl. Walze: Meine Herren! We're all going to die! There's just too many of the Upholders! All communications to the cruiser are down! What are we going to do?
[13:51:45]Fl. Freyberg: This is madness. They will never run out of these bombers, target the gunboat's main gun, we have to bring that beast down.
[13:51:49]Fl. Walze: But Herr Freyberg! We have orders to take the bombers off the Kaiser Friedrich! The ship will go down without us!
[13:51:53]Fl. Freyberg: Don't you understand, Daniel? We will *all* die if we don't disrupt that gunboat. If they kill us, fighters, there will be nothing left to keep the bombers off.
[13:51:58]Fl. Reichner: Hell, the Loudmouth actually has a good suggestion. Let's do it.

The gunboat's main gun was successfully taken down by a Mini-razor, shot by Flieger Reichner. The secondary guns of the gunboat still kept firing, so Freyberg ordered the destruction of the gunboat's engine, which he managed to do personally. The immobilized gunboat was out of range to influence the battle, so without support, the remaining Upholders retreated. The LNS Victory and its crew was eventually captured by the RNC Scharnhorst and its escort. The Kaiser Friedrich was recovered intact, but suffered heavy losses and the ship was disassembled at Alster Shipyard after the battle. Flieger Freyberg was promoted to Gefreiter in the following days and was assigned to lead numerous patrols during the war, he even participated in an assault led to capture Planet Houston from the Libertonain rulers.

"Excuse me for the way of forming my words, but this many is... crazy. He basically assumed control without an authorization to do so, jeopardized the crew of a whole cruiser and broke direct orders. However, I have to say, if this man is not brave and desperate enough, hundreds would have died. If not for the well coordinated and executed attack on the gunboat, we'd have lost the Kaiser Friedrich, the whole reinforcement wing and who knows what else these Libertonians wanted to destroy."
-Major Felix Massie, chief officer of the Battleship Westfalen.

"To be honest, we really didn't like the guy at first, but I have to say, it was because we envied him a lot. He had all that was needed to be a good pilot and we saw that. Heh, I remember. We called him Loudmouth before the Bering incident, even though he hardly even said a single word about the 'Sairs or his family's history. How I hated him. Yeah, I even had a tought in Bering, when he assumed control that I'll shoot him in the butt for treason. Damn, I'm so glad I didn't do it. He's a great man, we were all happy to serve with him." -Obergefreiter Anton Reichner, former wingman of Freyberg.

"Fine ship the Freddy was. It's a huge shame that a stainer had more holes than our cruiser after the Bering assignment. We lost an awful lot of good people that day, but we'd have lost more if the reinforcement wing didn't arrive. To be honest, I was busy with trying to keep the ship from falling apart as the enemy was destroyed, but I remember that everyone was repeating the word 'Freyberg, Freyberg, Freyberg' on the communications channel. Later turned out that we owe the guy a lot. Shame I never met him personally."
-Nikolai Sovok, former chief engineer of the RNC Kaiser Friedrich.

Freyberg and the MND: It is rumored that the Marinenachrichtendienst had its eyes on Ansgar Freyberg since the Bering assignment, but rather as a possible spy than a potential member, although there is no concrete evidence on this at all. The first contact that MND agents officially made with Freyberg happened after a routine patrol that he and his wing made around Hamburg. As he landed, Leutnant Graf, Ansgar's commanding officer escorted him to a meeting with Walter Wulff, an agent from the Marinenachrichtendienst. They met in the prison block, which Freyberg recalls as a "frustrating experience". Wulff noticed that the Gefreiter was not exactly behaving accordingly and even though he wanted to reconsider taking Freyberg into the MND, he eventually offered him a mission that "tested" Ansgar's combat, reconaissance, cunning and co-operation skills. Freyberg agreed to submit himself to the test, so he was rendered unconscious and taken to a classified location to participate in a test.

Freyberg was put into a simulation that emitted him the exact reproduction of the California system. In a nutshell, he had to obtain information with a specially outfitted Wraith class fighter on the exact location of a convoy carrying valuable material to a classified research station, was ordered to help the strike wing to gain control of the material and disperse the area without leaving a trace of ever being there.

NOTE: The exact details of the initiation mission are classified Level Omega, only the highest ranking Marinenachrichtendienst officers and the Kanzler are allowed to access them.

"The Marinenachrichtendienst initiation test has been passed by Gefreiter Ansgar Freyberg. His combat skills are adequate, his evasion skills are remarkable, he also tracked the convoy down within the required time. He will be a worthy addition to our ranks." -Walter Wulff, Marinenachrichtendienst agent.
