((Gonna write as much as I can now, cus I'll probably never touch this again, a habit I have sadly))
Simon Keller smiled as his family gathered around him, singing happy birthday. It was his 18th, and the presents had been piled up in front of him. His sister sang horribly out of key, but he laughed along with them and blew up the candles on the cake.
Then everything went black.
He opened his eyes slowly, eyes flicking around. He was inside a... pod of some description. There was glass in front of him, and through it he saw a woman peering in. Smiling. He was stood up, the metal door in front of him solid and claustrophobic. He shuddered.
Then the door hissed, and slid to the side. There, in front of him stood the woman, who smiled and helped him out of the pod.
"Hello" she said, softly. "My name is Silvia, I'm sure you're very confused, but we're going to get you cleaned up and into some clothes and then I'll explain everything to you, ok?"
Simon nodded dumbly, realising he was naked and covered in some sort of goo. They rushed him through showers and into some grey clothes made of a material he had never felt before. Slowly he was guided into a seat by two men who hadn't said a word, and then left there. Silvia sat across from him.
"Hello again." She said. "The last thing you will remember is the exact second you turned 18. Could you tell me your name?"
Simon nodded, and opened his mouth to speak. His voice sounded raspy. "Simon" he said.
She inclined her head at this, and wrote something on a piece of paper. Then she put it down on the table between them and paused.
"Could you tell me the date please Simon?"
"14th of November, 2010" he said.
She sucked in a deep breath, and then began.
"Ok. The current date is the 9th of August, 2072. You are a clone of a person who lived on Earth in 2010, and have lived his life for the first 18 years while we sped you up to a human adult size."
His mouth hung loose.
"So, I'm going to explain how you got here, where here is, and why you are here. All I ask is that you listen. Is that ok?"
He nodded.
"Ok. Let's start in the year 2018."
She hesitated, took a drink from a blue cup, and then began.
"Climate change had led to widespread rise in the oceans, causing mass panic as towns, villages and even cities were flooded by the unstoppable water. Tens of Millions of Refugees started moving inland, with countires like Bangladesh and the Netherlands being completely sunk, and leading to mass migration to new countries. Around the world, countries closed their borders, and millions died with no where to go.
"The UK was hard hit, with the Thames Barrier failing in early 2019, and London having bad flooding which led to a new city being designated as the centre for business: Manchester.
"In the Spring, May to be exact, the Atlantic Stream, which brought warm water and air to the UK, changed its course. Noone is exactly sure why, but all evidence pointed to the rise in sea level. It changed to a course down the middle of the Atlantic, and overnight the UK's temperature dropped by an average of 10 degrees. People went to bed to a mild spring, and woke up to find snow falling outside.
"Britain was unable to cope with large scale snowfall, and services were quickly disrupted, leading to mass protests over the use of fossil fuels in UK power plants. The government was called upon to shut down Gas and Oil plants, and to rely instead upon Nuclear power.
"The government of the time called a referendum, which was split almost exactly in half down the middle. Making their choice, the government continued using fossil fuels, and large scale riots started. This led to a peak in July, when a suicide bomber ran into the houses of parliament while they were in session, and killed every minister present.
"Britain fell apart at the seams, and thinking swiftly, the head of the Army at the time, the Lord General Harry Christy, declared Martial law. This led to more riots, and the army had to start using violence to keep the peace while a new government was formed.
"I've skipped a step, apologies. In 2015, the RAF and the Royal Navy were combined, following the introduction of new floating carriers, aircraft carriers capable of hovering using Hydrogen turbines. I'll explain more about them later.
"Anyway, the Armed Forces, as the RAF/Navy combination was known as, kept out of it all. Lord General Christy attempted to hold an election in July after a large scale attack against an army outpost, and in a sudden act of power, a radical party called the BNP managed to sweep in and take control.
"Their first act in power was to declare all non Whites and all non British people to be deported, an act which, in an incredibly powerful broadcast, General Christy refused to do. Britain was being split down the middle.
"One by one, towns, villages and counties declared their independance from the United Kingdom, building walls around their various areas and creating their own democracies within them. Towns of contrasting views started to battle, and after a month, General Christy disbanded the army, dividing the weaponry and equipment up between the men and ordering them to return to their hometowns, and to do as they wished.
"General Christy appeared on TV, and begged the people of Britain to stop fighting, to allow democracy to be recreated, and when a large number of protestors appeared with weapons, chanting for his head, he pulled his ceremonial sword from it's scabbard, and fell upon it, his last words echoing in the heads of every Britain: "Then curse yourselves."
"The United States attempted to send aid, along with Canada and Russia, but the troops were refused entry to the country, and shot at when they attempted to resist deportation. President Phillip Lane expressed his sympathies on a live broadcast, but refused to allow British people to flee to the United States.
"On the 4th of September, 2019, the British Armed Forces, including both Hovering Carriers, the Atlantis and the Destiny, along with 3 Floating Aircraft Carriers, 9 Battleships, and 46 other Naval craft, all with close to a thousand aircraft, left the south coast of Britain after the town of Southampton launched a strike against a Battleship in an attempt to gain posession of it. Included in this flotilla were 6 submarines: Trident 1, 2 and 3, and Vanguard 1, 2 and 3. The 6 Nuclear ships of Britain.
"The Armed Forces moved en masse across the Atlantic, abandoning their old country, and moved towards the East coast of the USA, where they were waited, and then begged for Asylum.
"The USA debated for 14 days, and the Armed Forces fleet just waited off the coast. Then, on the 15th day, an offer came to them, but not from the United States, from another country: Canada.
"The Canadian President extended the offer of asylum to the Armed Forces, who took 21 minutes to accept and set sail for their new home. In return for Canadian citizenship, their ships and equipment would fall under the control of the Canadian government and the Canadian Military.
"The United State denounced the desicion, but could do nothing to stop it as Canada provided the USA with most of it's oil and gas to power their power stations. Reluctantly, they allowed Canada to become the second most advanced military to their own."
At this, Silvia paused and drank some more. Then she began again.
"Half a world away, in the same year, 2019, China ran out of coal. They had been lied to by power companies, who had promised more of the substance for a good decade, and in half a day every power station the Chinese had shut down. Chinese officials had limited options, but realised that all the coal they had been promised was now in another countries hands: the USA's.
"Knowing they could not take the coal from the United States, the Chinese looked to the only other source of power in Asia: Russia. The Chinese government made an offer to the Russians: In return for consumer goods and money, the Russians would give them gas and oil.
"The Russians refused."
"A chinese army of unprecedented size was gathered, and 200 million men marched towards Russia on the 9th of October. The rest of the world gasped at this army, for it was larger than every other army in the world combined. On the 15th of October they passed into Russia, and moved towards Moscow.
"Then the Russians commited an act of such atrocity that they lost any support they had ever gained. Their own people turned against them and overthrew the government in a matter of hours. The Russian President ordered for a nulcear device to be buried underground in the path of the oncoming army, and it was detonated on the 18th of October, as the main chinese army passed above it. Every single member of the army perished in the blast or shortly after due to the radiation.
"The government overthrown and murdered, Russia was unable to get another party into power except the communist party, which promptly continued murdering and imprisoning people. The world was falling apart. The Chinese fell to pieces day's later, but not before firing every single missile it had at Russia. Russia retaliated with another Nuke, this time aimed at the Three Gorges dam. The subsequent collapse of the dam and the deaths of all those beneath it led to a second overthrow of the government.
"In the space of a week, China and Russia were both reduced to almost nothing."
