really looking forward to starting the game but reading the forums theres a few things im confused about as im not sure where RP stops and real in game mechanics start:Pand didnt want to be asking in game.

Trading:
In the other mods iv played there was 2 kinds - buying commodities from a npc and selling them to another, commodities had no use to players whatsoever except for selling to npc.
The other kind was selling ship hardware to players.

When I read in the forums about this clan trading with that one etc etc, is that just RP? or is there some kind of active market here in which case could someone explain it? eg what is traded, what creates the demand and why doesnt the buyer just get whatever he needs himself?

Secondly the ID system - is there a list somewhere of all the different available ones and what they will do to standings etc - also the secondary ID for "specializing"? how do they work, as in which ID combos are allowed etc.

Another thing is ships and equipment - There is a strong possibility that in the future I might start a clan since I had already done alot of the work on it for another RP server that fell through (requiem) and Iv noticed in peoples clan creation thread that they state what ships and things they will be using......is there a database where you can see all the available stuff in game? or do these people just know everything from first hand in game knowledge?

oooo - and people often mention research and development within their clans - is that just RP or is there some kind of research mechanic?

I think thats it:Pim sure ill have more questions once iv started
look here for a start.

trading - well its just trading you buy stuff on one planet and sell it on another one. when people request some equipment its merely an rp opportunity for trading factions.

yes and selling equipment .. speciffically codename weapons is a kind of a big business here, even if a tad annoying.

you can find all the id's on wiki. most of hem you can just buy at respective bases, some of them are special, but youll find out soon enough.

ships - well factions (we call groups of players factions here, not clans, but whatever) usually use ships that fit to their kind of alignment or roleplay. lawful player factions use house police/military ships, freelancers, mercenaries and such characters with no npc-faction specific orientation use 'civilian' ships and equipment unless requested and approved by the ship owner faction.

youll get into it soon enough.

What'cha wearin'?
Well, everything I would of said got summed up by... How the hell do I shorten 'What do you care?'?

So, I'll just say the usual Welcome! Have fun, read the rules a few times, and if you have any questions, give us a shout!
Welcome to Discovery!
It's good to see some actually come and check the Forums before joining the Server, So, Here is answer of your questions (Bob is reading this thread too, so if he doesnt ninja me while I'm writing >.>) So,

First of all, Trading is generally what you do when Buying a commodity from a NPC base and selling it to another, But we also have 'Open Market' on forums, Which is the place players exchange what they have InRP! Means, Captain X have found/Made/Bought Item Y in game, and is offering to sell it for Price Z, you are interested in the said Item/Ship/Gun/Whatever, So you offer the Price Z and get the Item, This is how it works, And Also for Factions, they have some exchanges between themselves, for example, Faction X allows faction Y to use their Ships, but in return, faction Y must escort Faction X's Traders with those Ships. I Hope it's clear enough.

As for ID, You are missing an important point! Only One ID is allowed per Ship! Means you should always carry One ID, No more, No less. (So, Combining IDs is not an option) When using an ID, always read the ID parameters carefully, also, You can find a complete list of IDs on This Page.

And as for Equipments and 'Clan's, There are no 'Clans' in Discovery RP 24/7, but there are Factions. When you create a Faction, it should be based on a already existing NPC Faction (For example - Kishiro Technologies) and it should follow the Line of that Faction, or at least should be related to the said Faction. (For example - Check 'Reapers of Sirius' to see what I mean about 'Being Related but not exactly the same') And for Equipment usage, there is the Tech Chart available, that lists all the possible technologies a Specific ID can use.
(You should Always Equip your ship based on Tech Chart, no matter if you are in an official faction or not)
- And, the 'Research' thingie is more of a RP based activity than an actual Game mechanism.

Also, Check these Links, They might come in Handy;
  • Complete Version of Server Rules
    - Reading and Understanding all these (Even though it might get a bit confusing in the beginning) is essential for Survival (!) on this Server!
  • Technology Usage Chart
    - Want to make a New character with a Specific ID ? First read the ID and its restriction carefully, then check this chart to see What Ships and Guns you can use with it.
  • Discovery Wiki
    - Need Information about any Faction, Ship, or Equipment ? You'll find what you need here.
  • Server Commands
    - There are many Client-Side commands available on This server, which are really useful, You can find a complete list on the Wiki Page.
When you are In Game and need help, Look for those nice guys around with [The_Angel] Tag, They sure know how to help you out.
Also, you might like to spend some time reading our Role-Playing Hub And even decide to join in! Remember, Server Roleplay comes first, but then, there is Forum Roleplay, which can be really enjoyable if you are the 'Writer' type!

So, If you need anything more, Just ask! and ... Enjoy Your stay!;)
cheers for the replys guys:Dlinks are really useful. I used "clan" just as a generic name since every server and games call it something different...clan, guild, corporation, faction, legion etc etc

I think the faction will most likely be based in bretonia so ill guess ill start looking closely at their factions:D
Looks like everything is said, so WELCOME HERE!!! :yahoo:
ooo, ooo more questions!

how do you tell what faction someone is if they dont have a tag in their name? I know you can see their ID if you scan them but takes alot of time. - I have run into pirates in the lanes and they've known right away that I have a civvy ID....they must know right away because they dont ask me to stop or anything just wave me by:P

also - then faction ids say that they can use liners, does that mean royal liners too? and when it says royal liners - can that include normal liners or are they mutually exclusive

which ships can mount mining equipment and are they any restrictions on who can mine (ie do you need a miner id?)
Being in Most factions automatically means having the faction's IFF (because you can buy the ID only at full Rep) But, for the cases like Civilian ID, Pirate ID, Mercenary ID, or whatever, Your only chance is getting in Scanner Range and scanning them to see their ID. - But Pirates letting you go might be for being underlevel, or because of the Pirate feeling nice that day:P

For IDs and Liners, When It says 'Liners' it means any liners, but when it says 'Slave Liner' or 'Prison Liner' or any other Liners, it means Only the said Liner.
Check these 2 IDs as example:
'Orbital Spa & Cruise ID'' Wrote:Allowed ships: Fighters, Freighters, Transports, Liners
'Junker ID' Wrote:Allowed ships: Fighters, Freighters, Transports, Gunboats, Slave Liner, Prison Liner

Also, for Mining, check The Official Mining Guide. Basically, Anyone can mine, but if you mine InRP (Means with correct ID/IFF/Ship/Equipment) you will get much more profit out of mining, than the time you Mine in a Recruit ID/Navy IFF/Hawk/Hornviper Mk.I;)
how concrete are the faction allowed ship entries in the wiki? http://discoveryfl.com/wiki/index.php?titl...Armed_Forces_ID

I find it quite odd that the military cant use bombers or capital ships:P
Damn Im late to this thread....

Welcome, everything has been said already, also....

Bombers are considered fighters (yeah I know), gunboats -are- capital ships..
For a bigger cap you need guard ID, simple as that
