The Bridge

The bridge is the nerve center of the Perihelion, just as it is on any large capital ship. From here, the command crew oversees every aspect of the ship's operation, from engineering to navigation, as well as weapons, internal security, and communications, both internal and external. As with most Carrier class vessels, the Perihelion's bridge is actually composed of two seperate sections: the Main Bridge, commonly called the Tactical Command, or TacCom, and the Command and Control Center, refered to as the CnC.
The TacCom is vital to the ship's operations, and as such is buried within the Perihelion's hull, beneath layers of armor. The ship uses an array of sensors and external cameras to relay information to the command crew without compromising the hull integrity.
The CnC, on the other hand, is the control center for the Perihelion's fighter wings. With a full fighter complement of 80 craft, the Perihelion's CnC is one of the most active sections of the ship. Standard procedure is to have, at any one moment, a minimum of three full squadrons in the black, as well as a fourth on standby. As such, the CnC is linked directly to the Perihelion's sensor array, to ensure the quickest possible reactions in a combat situation. Some of the crew have occasionally commented that the tactical display and sensor map seem unusually fast, even for a Carrier.
The Hanger Deck

A Carrier without fighters is like a gun without bullets, and without a hanger, there is no place to store fighters. The Perihelion's massive hanger deck takes up a full third of the ship's interior, and is capable of holding nearly ten full squadrons, or 120 ships. Using rotating cradles to hold each wing of fighters until they are ready to be launched, the carrier can deploy its fighters rapidly in an emergency. Located amidships, the ventral launch bay allows the cradles to simply 'drop' their fighters out of the ship, rotating to the next ship to be launched in turn like a revolver. The launch bay can handle a maximum of four cradles to be launching near-simultaneously, each one deploying in series while the previous cradle rotates the new fighter into position. Because of the complexity of this kind of deployment, the Perihelion's CnC computers guide the fighters by autopilot until they clear the ship to prevent collisions.
Not all of the Perihelion's fighters have pilots, however, even though she carries a number of reserve pilots in case of medical issues. One cradle carries only a single Nyx fighter, but no crew member ever goes near that ship. It is rumored that the Captain keeps that fighter in storage for a pilot that is no longer flying with the Perihelion.
The Drive

Deep inside the Perihelion's hull, in a sealed and reinforced chamber just behind the main reactor, is one of the few elements of the ship that remains a mystery to even her own crew.. The exact function and workings of the device contained within the three hundred square meter room are unclear, but analysis of the systems that hook the chamber directly into the reactor systems suggest a relation between it and the jump systems of the old sleeper ships, though there are some sections of the device that resemble components of an advanced type of sensor array.
Whatever the purpose, the device is tied directly into the reactor, and seems to be completely isolated from the rest of the ship. However, several theories have risen up amongst the crew of the Perihelion concerning the device's purpose. The most popular of these among the engineering crew is that the device is an advanced sensor array that is tied into the Perihelion's CnC Center, a theory born from the unusually quick responsiveness of the CnC computers.
There is a small group within the engineering crew that maintains the belief that, based on the structure and location within the ship, the device is actually some sort of experimental fold-drive, aleit one almost completely isolated from the ship's main systems. Despite the lack of concrete evidence supporting it, this theory has been slowly gaining popularity among the crew as of late.
The Crew

The crew of the Perihelion are varied and diverse in both their origins and their habits. While a majority of them are from the Independant Miners Guild, the nature of Freeport 4 meant that a wide array of pilots from all over Sirius passed through there, and Captain Tal took advantage of that when he was assembling his crew.
The original crew of the Tal's first command, the Hydra-class gunboat Perihelion still remains a core part of his command crew, but he was since expanded it with both Libertonian and Bretonian pilots, as well as a couple of ex-Planetform escort pilots, victims of corporate 'downsizing'.
The Perihelion's pilots are typically IMG members from either Bretonia or the Taus, usually reserve escort pilots regulated to Freeport patrol duties. A good-natured rivalry exists between the pilots of Blue Squadron, most of whom originated from the Battleship Hood in the Dublin system, and Gold Squadron, whose members almost all hail from Holman Outpost in Tau-31.

Talwarrn Lyrandar, The Captain

Captain Talwarrn Lyrandar, commonly referred to as 'Tal', is the current captain of the Perihelion. The Lyrandar family is an older Independant Miners Guild family, but a small one, and in the family, it is tradition when the come of age for each member to join the Guild ranks as either a miner or an escort pilot and serve for a year.
While his elder brother Marcus chose the path of a miner, Tal followed the route of an escort pilot, and he rose quickly through the ranks, eventually earning the command of a small Hydra Gunboat, the Perihelion.
Though opperating occasionally in the Omega systems, Tal and the Perihelion were mostly stationed at Freeport 4, keeping the station safe and enforcing the Freeport's rules. However, while on a routine resupply run to Aland Shipyard in Omega-3, the Perihelion was set upon by the Necrosis, a heavily modified battlecruiser commanded by the terrorist Mon'Star. The gunboat was no match for the guns of the Necrosis, and while all hands aboard the Perihelion were evacuated safely, the ship itself was crippled and set adrift. While Tal and his crew were eventually rescued hours later by passing Zoner convoy, by that time the Perihelion had drifted out of sensor range, deep into the nearby ice asteroid field. The gunboat was assumed lost, and has never been found to this day. After the loss of the gunboat, Tal remained on Freeport 4, grounded without a ship to command.
The mysterious appearance of a completely empty Zephyr-class Carrier within the Magellan system months later, however, changed that.

Amaria Kann, The XO

Commander Amaria Kann is the Executive Officer, or XO, of the Perihelion, second in command only to Captain Lyrandar himself. Amaria has been with Tal Lyrandar's crew almost from the beginning, and was a member of his crew whilst he still commanded the Hydra gunboat. It was her idea to reuse the name of his previous command for the new Zephyr, an idea which went over well with the rest of the old ship's crew.
As the XO, Amaria is typically found manning the Perihelion's comm station, and her voice is usually the one responding to transmissions directed to the carrier. While she seems kind and polite to an outsider, among the crew, Amaria is known for her icy attitude when it comes to internal efficiency matters.
