The story of Gallia's scrap merchants, referred to by the Sirians as "Junkers", begins with a corporation founded only thirty years after planetfall; Les Union des constructeurs, or the Builder's Union of Gallia. The first expansion efforts, both planetside and back into the stars, were vanguarded by the union, which took charge of every major construction effort of Gallia's early days - both military and civilian alike.
The Union quickly grew as the house expanded, always finding more work further and further from Ile de France. Full of patriotism and loyalty, the Union's leaders were highly revered amongst the Royalty of the House of Gallia, and were eventually entrusted with one of the most secretive projects to ever be undertaken by the house - the laying of the minefields which would separate Gallia from it's Sirian neighbors until the time was right to reveal itself.
Over the span of nearly two centuries, the mines were laid, nearly the entirety of the Union was put to work on the very edges of Gallic space. The fields were meant to be impenetrable but, seeing a profit in the ability to come and go as they please, several leaders of the Union laid out elaborate mazes through the mines that were nearly impossible to detect or follow - only a keen pilot with the proper minefield maps would ever be capable of making it through, and even then only in the smallest of ships.
While the act itself was in defiance of the orders issued by Gallia's Royalty, these pathways would eventually play an invaluable part in the House's theft of Sirian technology, as the most trusted Union leaders were selected to fly through the minefield and establish an Order of grifters and vagabonds in the Sirian colonies with the ultimate goal of gathering intel and relaying technological advancements back to Gallia's scientists. These spies, playing the role of drifting salvagers in order to infiltrate as many houses as possible, would eventually come to be called The Junkers, an enigmatic but inseparable part of Sirian society.
Over the following centuries, as expansion efforts within Gallia came to a halt, the Union began to dissolve. What was once one of the largest corporations in the house was no longer needed at such capacity, with no room to expand due to the minefields blocking in the Gallic populace. The Union of Builders nearly died off, dropping down to only a few hundred members kept employed by the Royalists in order to maintain and repair military and corporate stations, and to handle clean up efforts when necessary.
Over time, those few remaining members disbanded the Union and formed a smaller organization known as "Les Ferrailleurs" - the scrap merchants. The Ferrailleurs took up a very similar role to their alienated brothers in Sirius, turning away from the position of a corporation and becoming more akin to a band of nomads held together by similar talents. The Ferrailleurs were mechanics, builders, salvagers, reverse engineers, and all other manner of mechanically adept individuals.
While the passing of time had left nothing but a memory of the Union of Builders, Les Ferrailleurs gradually worked their way into every corner of Gallic Society. They were ever-present, found on every other streetcorner, every space station, the Corporations hired Ferrailleurs as mechanics and engineers aboard their ships, the group even expanded to the point of repurposing old mining stations and supply depots around Gallic space to use as their own centers of congregation. Much of their activity was mired in secrets and much of their wealth came from the sale of repurposed goods on the Gallic Black Market - though despite these seemingly criminal activities, the majority of Ferrailleurs were still patriotic to the end, always ready to heed the call of Gallia's Royalists should it be sent out.
It was this loyalty that earned The Ferrailleurs their place in the modern age. Gallia's leadership became fearful of spies and possible rebellion, the first Gallic Civil war had shown them that many of the House's civilian populace were eager to take up arms against their government, believing that they had the right to leave Gallia and interact with the Sirians should they so choose. The Royalists decided that spies of their own were needed - eyes and ears among Gallia's corporations, civilians, and even its military which could report even the slightest hint of betrayal before a rebellion could start. The Royalists needed agents who could work their way into every corner of Gallic Society without being noticed, and they turned their eyes to the one organization that had already done exactly that, Les Ferrailleurs.
The scrap merchants of Gallia became agents of the King overnight, paid large sums of money for every rebel or insurrectionist that was routed from the populace. Over the span of a few short years, Les Ferrailleurs practically became the invisible hand of Gallia's Leadership, trusted by some political leaders even more than ranking members of Gallia's Royal Navy. They quickly learned the arts of espionage and subterfuge, carrying out delicate tasks for the Royalists both in the core worlds and within the hostile territories of the Gallic Borderworlds, all while under their persistent guise of simple junk dealers.
In the chaotic environment that defines modern-day Gallia, Les Ferrailleurs still live two lives at all times. Within the Gallic Core worlds, they have become a psuedo-corporation which handles construction, maintenance, repair, and clean-up of all major spacecraft and installations, their combat-oriented pilots often hire out to the other Corporations as mercenary escorts, and all the while they keep an ear to the ground, ever vigilant in their pursuit of the King's enemies. Outside of the Core Worlds, The Ferrailleurs maintain their traditional salvage and scrap merchant behavior, but simultaneously gather information on Council, Maquis, and Brigand operations to relay back to the Royal Navy.
It is common practice for Ferrailleur pilots to avoid openly showing their allegiance to the Royalists, particularly in the Gallic Borderworlds, as such an exposure could ruin their position entirely. However, in their capacity as mercenary escorts for Gallic Corporate Transports, they often find themselves engaging the unlawfuls of Gallia. Additionally, due to the radical tactics used by the Maquis, increasing aggression has developed between the two groups, often on a personal level.
