Little information is available regarding Daniel White. He was born in the 8th century on Planet New London, and by his own account spent his youth in relative comfort. His biography is unremarkable until he hit age 18, at which point he joined the Bretonia Armed Forces. Supposedly, he deserted some time after, and resisted arrest upon being confronted with this. After a firefight, the ship he was in was blown up. White was unable to make it into his escape pod in time, and had to be reanimated minutes afterwards, leading to his medical issues.

White was found guilty of desertion and resisting arrest, and was convicted to a jail sentence until the early 9th century. He was released as a wreck: all the medical attention in the world couldn't fix him. Upon release, White suffered from the following:
  • Damage to his spine, combined with brain damage, had resulted in a near complete paralysis. While still capable of moving hands and lower legs, White was bound to his wheelchair and had extreme difficulty with even basic tasks.
  • White's sight was extremely bad due to the explosion.
  • White's vocal cords had been severely damaged. While he could still whisper, White was unable to even speak plainly.
  • White was believed to be suffering from psychotic episodes. This was not confirmed until later on, however
Daniel White adopted an Alias - Shade - and vanished for some time. Keeping a relatively low profile, he attempted to apply and expand upon the science he had taught himself in prison, in an effort to fix himself and make his life as tolerable as possible. Shade's nihilistic world views - it is unknown if they surfaced after the incident, or had always been there - resulted in more and more crimes, including experiments on humans. Shade designed- and had himself implanted with ocular implants to largely correct his vision. He resorted to prosthetic limbs and robotic components, slowly rebuilding himself as well as he could.

Shade's crimes became more and more high-profile. Entire refugee transports would disappear, only to have the refugees' severely mangled, experimented-upon corpses found on remote planets and stations months later. For a short time, Shade was among Bretonia's most wanted men when it became clear that he was responsible. This did not last long: soon, Shade was once again captured, and sentenced to spend the rest of his life in prison. His cybernetic additions were destroyed, leaving him in a wheelchair once more with only his optical implants as a reminder of the benefits of his research.

In 819 AS, Shade, as well as several others, escaped from a Bretonian prison vessel with outside aid. The escape was carefully planned, and only possible thanks to outside assistance and a delivery by Mallory & Lambert Logistics. The escapees fled using Shade's old Roc. Shade is currently on the loose and considered dangerous; there are no clues regarding what his next actions will be.

The true danger behind this criminal - also the reason for his life-long conviction - is his ability to rationalize his crimes. With his nihilistic world views, Shade has fully rationalized himself into a morally normal person, who is no better or worse than any other, in spite of his inhumane experiments on other human beings and similar crimes. It is currently unknown if this is a side effect of his psychosis or depression - Shade has stubbornly refused all psychological evaluations to date. Even so, he shows not even a bit of regret, and even seems convinced that he is doing the right thing, rather than something horrible.
